Determining the Clul I'oKltlon 1 lie Attorney lrinteI View at Vari anceAnnexation the Idea. DELICATE DEI J f i CI0US BANTi One of the semi-occasional serious" meetings was held by the American league la-st night. It lasted till 10 o'clock, and was attended by about forty members. So much will be said about the affair that it la perhaps well to thus early publish a correct ver sion. At the last regular convention the secretary was instructed to request J. A. Magoon to tell the League if cor respondence .signed by him in a local paper was authentic. Mr. Magoon answered that he had written the let ter. Did it correctly express his views? It did, he said. Did he con sider holdlDir such an opinion compa tible with membership in the Ameri can League? Mr. Magoon said he failed to observe any inconsistency. His idea had been that the League was formed to advocate annexation or tn tirf for the islands a stable eov- ernment. lie considered the Repub lic a stable anu satisfactory iorm 01 government. Rv mninritv vote the Leaerue held that it was an annexation organiza tion, and that Mr. Magoon was an fintl.annexationist. This action read llm rmt at tho TAPUP. The proceedings were marked by expressions 01 con uueuue m TVTorfnrm'a man hood and honesty and by tolerance for his opinion. The League believes in the Republic and ta f,,,- if ami with it and will stand by if tiirnnrrh thirk and thin. Its devo tion to the Republic is only exceeded iv ita rfovnt ion to the political princi ple of annexation. These are the I lv those who on ac count of Mr. Magoon's agreeable per sonality reluctantly took issue with him. It was felt that a single mem i.pr nf th T.pacrue onnosed to the con stant advocacy of annexation was out of place. One epeaner ciaimeu mai, such an element would be a menace to the Republic. Mr. Magoon's letter on annexation was printed some days before election and brought out no end of comment. Xi Hang Chand.
