Meeting Yetterday 1 h Net lloanl of
Management I!ae Done tiuwl Work
for tli Stockholder I'ro.-t Oood. I "TED"V ESD AY"
Tbe stockholders of the Volcano
House Company held an adjourned
annual meeting yesterday morning to
discuss businees matters and elect new
ofllcers.
Tbe following gentlemen were elect
ed: President, w. It. Castle: Vice-
President. John Kda; Auditor, C. L.
Wight; Secretary, 8. B. Kose; Treas-
urer, IS. c. aiaciarlane.
Treasurer Macfarlane'" report for
the past fifteen months was read and
showed that tbe real current gain for
this period amounted to $3997.30, or a
dividend of nearly nine per cent, on a
capital 8 lock or Soo.uuu. mis is a re-
markale showing for tbe new board of
management as tbe concern was on
the verge of bankruptcy but six
months ago. Tbe trouble was averted,
However, ana from present appear
ances it looks as though tbe stock will
soon be considered gilt-edged. This
satisfactory state of attairs was
brought about by the new board of
directors, who took bold when every
thing was in a terrible state of conru
sion.
The treasurer's report is an elabo
rate one and shows that great care and
much labor had been spent in its pre
paration.
The indebtedness of the Company,
as shown by tbe books, June 30th,
1894, was $10,529.67. In speaking of
this Mr. Macfarlane says: "As the
resources of the company were inade
quate to prompt settlement of same, It
was decided to issue bonds to an
amount not exceeding $10,000, payable
In five years, and any portion or all
at the option of the company as pro
vided in the terms of the bonus them
selves. Tbe coupons are payable
semi-annually at the rate of eight per
cent, per annum. Ihe bondholders
were secured by a trust deed of tbe
Volcano property to J. F. Hackfeld,
trustee.
"The credits to coupon account are
refunds of interest by subscribers to
bonds to enable holders to draw full
coupons on January 1. 1893. These
refunds are owing to bonds being
taken after July 1, 1S94. The total
subscriptions to bonds aggregating
6900. Coupons to the amount of
four per cent, of the same will be paya
ble January 1, 1&95."
Regarding tbe prospects of the com
pany the report says: "Indications
point to a great Increase of both tran
sient and tourist travel. The past
three months have been the most
profitable since the inception of
the company. The management of
the company's hotel by 1'eter
Iee. leaves nothing to be de
sired. He unites all tbe qualifica
tions necessary for bis very peculiar
and arduous position. Half-fare tic
kets to children under twelve year3 of
age are now under consideration. It
is probable that all parties interested
will consent to such an arrangement.
"A new departure in the details of
bookkeeping has been inaugurated.
From and after October, 1894, the
books will be kept at the Volcano
House, and will include in entries all
transactions in Honolulu. An elabor
ate report, financial and statistical,
the joint production of Messrs. Thurs
ton and White, will be rilled out and
rendered quarterly."
In conclusion, Mr. Macfarlane says:
"It will be seen from my report that
the company has cancelled a portion
of its indebtedness by issuance of
bonds to the amount of $G900. The
balance of the Capital Stock untaken
nearly reaches these figures. It is ap
parent that no effort should be spared
to sell the balance of stock. Nor
should this task devolve alone on the
treasurer; an active canvass should be
made bv the friends of the company in
this direction.
'I have been immersed in a large
foreign correspondence, and have lost
no opportunity to supply Volcano lit
erature and information or advantage
to intending tourists. As a result three
Cook Tourist Excursions will visit the
islands in the near future.
MI. B. Bice, our passenger agent in
California, is also pushing tourist
travel in this direction. A corres
pondence conducted with the Union
steamship Company, and the lavish
distribution of information demanded
for them, will undoubtedly result
most favorably for the Company inter
ests. In short, the outiooK lor ine
year 1S9-5 is a bright one."
Thanked for Their lVork.
At the eighty-fifth annual meeting
of the American Board of Commis
sioners for Forelcrn Missions, held at
Madison. Wis., on October 10, the
following resolution was passed
"Besolved, That the Board place
upon record its thankful appreciation
of the invaluable service done by r.
and Mrs. Bingham in giving to the
people of the Gilbert Islands the en
tire Bible in their own language, re
cognizing in their accomplishment
another illustration of the value of
patient scholarship in missionary
work.
