Living at the end of Queen and South streets has never been similar to living in the Garden of Eden and the Paradise of the Pacific. Mr. Cooke used to cremate most of the filth. Lately it has been used to 511 in .lots, with good dirt on top. iJut I never knew of a dead horse or mule being buried a few feet under ground as has been done by oruer oi a cny pnysician ana mat any nature public gatherings of whatsoever. Fumigate the city, stop the pro miscuous depositing of garbage, and drain the stinking duck and fieh ponds a3 well as the so-called cesspools ; then carry on the good work. Numerous complaints were tele phoned from the vicinity of Beretan ia and Pensacoia streets yesterday afternoon, regarding disagreeable odors which emanated from a Chi nese lodging housa at that place. Captain Parker and several officers went to the place immediately, and there found one of the filthiest loca tions met with eince the beginning of the cholera scare. The house and about one hundred feet more or less grounds are leased by a Chinaman from the residences of this section. I called Tai Kee, who keeps a kind of Saturday morning three drays of n a-nationalitiea hotel. Natives, all sorts of filth from all narts of MaPa.nes.e ana Uhinamen, about a the town were dumned at th end ?an.dred and. my in number, hold of Queen street almost in front of a new store and right at the side of they discovered reasons the new Beach road. There were erous complaints, in tl picking over thi3 filth. The women were uressea in tneir nignt gowns and the men in their underclothes. Children were there as well. No one could tell what might be in this filth or what will yet be the outcome of these natives picking over and using decayed vegetables and fruits for 8wipe3 and other uses. We would respectfully ask that cesspool carts be prohibited from dumping liquid matter from closets officers reached it for the num. the sickeninc odors which came from the place. In tue back yard and almost hidden from view by rotton boards, was a kind of a pool, into which had been allowed to flow refuse water of all kinds. When Captain Parker stuck a stick into it to test its deDth he was almost overcome. The officers at once proceeded to tear up the boards which concealed from view this hole of concentrated disease. The Chi nese proprietor made strenuous ob jection to the action, but subsided into submissive silence when, the A v 1 1 iff t3 f if 1 I Sllfftf I mm &s $ TO WAIANAE. But cer tainly it is not fair to the business men and bread-winners to handle the question in the uncertain man ner that it is being handled. It is generally understood around town that the physicians who have had experience in caring for and coping with Asiatic cholera have not as yet had sufficient evidence to warrant them in pronouncing the sickness, of which several have lately suddenly died, as the dreaded disease; nor have the public been given to understand that the step3 taken have been of simply a precautionary nature. It is a well known fact that one of the greatest spreaders of this disease, even among people of stronger wills and less superstition than the na tive Hawaiian?, is the fear of the disease, and many cases are on record to prove persons to have died of sickness brought on solel' by fright. The partial stopping of travel and hinderance to tcatfic will not help matters, and makes business stagnant as well as cesspools, and gives people time to conjecture and talk cholera. The Oriental never does any more work than is necessary, and when not working, his engrossing care is to make himself comfortable. In many respects the art of living appears bet ter understood in the East than in our bustling Western world. There i3 now hardly a fashionable home that has not its Oriental room or rooms, or at least its cozy corner; sometimes the latter is Japanesque in effect, sometimes Turkish; but what ever it is, be sure it is the result of an Inner craving for the beautiful things of life.
