The latter went to the butts at Kakaako shortly after 1 o'clock and secured themselves within. The Vol unteers went down, but they were not allowed admittance to any of the stalls until 3 o'clock, ar when the Regulars were good and through. They claim they should have been allowed to en ter as soon as they arrived on the scene. As it was, the Regulars were shooting by themselves and had :none of the Volunteer laddies to bother their heads about. Company B had a very serious mis fortune which probably cost them the Marlin trophy. It came II. S. Ewing's turn to shoot and he had lain his rifle down, -when, just as he had taken hold, it went off. WALTER MAXWELL, director. Bureau and Experiment Station, Ha waiian Sugar Planters' Association, November 21, 1S96L Malagasy Cookery. Cooking being an art, every race has a style of its own. The Malagasy, like the gentle Hindoo, knows how to pre pare his mess of rice. It is not boiled to a mash, as in England, or as our pota toes are sometimes pulped; but, covered with a proper sufficiency of water, it is carefully treated until the grains are swollen fit to burst, and yet remain full, intact, soft and rather mealy. The manioc root is an easier dish to prepare. It is sometimes served boiled, as yams and sweet potatoes, and again as a sort of cold porridge. Native coffee they nu- derstand how to make, and the aroma is excellent. But tea alas, you have to kicTc to the brewing of that from start to lirish if you desiro a drinkable cup. Poultiy and game are eaten fresh, unci the cooks have a clever and withal cleanly trick of dipping the dead ani mals in boiling water, which enables them to pluck easily and quickly. The preparation for trussing comes later. There is no lack of variety at a Mala gasy table; but, all the same, you miss the vvheaten flour bread, sugar and condiments, when cloyed with rice, fowls, manioc and eggs. The staple fuel is bunch grass, "which when dried burns fiercely and settles in a glowing ember that gives off a deal of heat All the cooking is done on earthen hearths, and .the roasting, boiling and baking in big iron pots. The grass being slightly aro matic, the odor is as agreeable as that of a hard wood fire, London Telegraph. GEORGE FRED WILLIAMS. ".November 25th (4 a. m.) we had a very heavy shock of earthquake here which not only wakened us from our peaceful slumbers, but rendered pea.ee in slumber no longer possible. It was one of those old-time rumblers which come upon people without warning and go with a rumble that suggests a sneedv reietition. We are thankful to be alive. "November 24th. Kilauea is very ac tive. Last night fire was thrown from a cone over 100 feet high, and the re flection was seen all over the district. This is the first time any such re flection has been seen for two or three years. "The Ke Au Hou arrived at Honua- po from Honokaa on November 26th, discharged her lumber and went to Punaluu to discharge fertlizer and load sugar. Have had fine rains here since the W. G. Hall left." Wonderful Figure. Some men are hard to please, espe eiaUy in their flustered and ill natnred moods. The Scottish American has a story of such a man, an Edinburgh banker. One day, -when nothing had gone to suit him, he broke out suddenly to one of the clerks in a tone like a thunder clap; "Look here, Jones 1 This won't do! These figures are a perfect disgrace. An office boy could do better. If he couldn't I'd discharge him. Look at that five, will you? It locks just like a three. No body would take it for anything else. Look at it, I say. There is as much character in a woman s neck as in her face or hands. If it is round, white and perfectly shaped the hair should be arranged to reveal it entirely; but sometimes it is as much a composite as the face, the front or throat revealing a softness and roundness of contour, but the back being disfigured by a deep hollow at the base of the skull. This character istic denotes strength of physique, mo ral and mental endurance. The deeper the cleft the greater the degree of eith er quality.
