Egan intends retiring from business, and within the next few days will offer his entire stock of dry goods for sale. A meeting of persons interested in forming a wheelmen's racing board will be held at the Chamber of Com merce room at 7:30 this evening. The Supreme Court decided yester day not to grant the motion for a re hearing of the case of Maria K. and William Harbottle vs. T. W. Rawlins. Mr. Ewlng, portrait artist with J. J. Williams, has just completed a re markably fine portrait in water colors of Mrs. James H. Boyd. There is a great sentiment in favor of the sham battle at Punahou. The companies have all voted in favor of it, and President Dole is anxious for it to take place. Miss Parke and Mr. Parke gave a delightful euchre party at their home on Beretania street to 72 people last evening. After the 14 hands were played refreshments were served. The prizes were very beautiful. It is understood that on Saturday night "Trilby" Fowler will ride down a flight of steps 50 feet high and go into the lake. It will not be trick rid ing. The getting out of the mud will be the trick for "Trilby" to accomplish. There is a greenhorn race on for Tuesday night at Cyclomere Park. The boys will probably be padded to avoid meeting with bruises, and those who start out on the inside track may be looked for with life preservers in their possession. The Japanese Government has is sued a pamphlet of the laws and par ticulars governing the gold standard issues. It contains illustrations of some of the gold pieces of various de nominations. The Advertiser has been supplied with a copy by the Yokohama Specie Bank. Minister Sewall, who is a lover of a good horse, has secured from Mr. E. S. Cunha the well-known handsome roadster "Smoothie." The animal, which had been a favorite with the Honolulu man, matches perfectly a trotting beauty the Minister had pur chased some time ago. Presented With Watcli. Yesterday morning Capt. J. B. Gor man of the First Regiment team was presented with a gold watch by Com pany E in token of their appreciation of his services in assisting in the winning of the championship of 1897. George and Edward Farnum gave a pretty chrysanthemum tea in their cottage at the Hawaiian from 4 to 6 yesterday afternoon. The Quin tette Club was present, and the music from this delightful band of native singers, coupled with the delightful en tertainment furnished by the hosts of the afternoon, made the occasion one to be long remembered by those pres ent. Among these were the following: Mrs. Wilder, Mrs. Laura Wight, Mrs. F. M. Swanzy, Mrs. H. Gunn, Miss Grace Clarke, Miss Stansbury, Mr. Rodgers, Mr. Andrews, Dr. Murray, Mr. J. M. Monsarrat and others. The Farnum brothers have become very much attached to Honolulu, and freely express their regret at having to leave for the States on the Coptic. They met Jamie Wilder in Japan, and having come into contact with his fam ily, as well as many of the other so ciety people of Honolulu, they feel as if they really would find much pleas ure in remaining. Postmaster General Returns. Postmaster - General Oat arrived home on the Mauna Loa yesterday, after an absence of 25 days, attending to the work of inspecting the various post offices on the Island of Hawaii. He says that they are in excellent con dition, and that the people are all very much pleased with the service. Mr. Oat cannot say enough in praise of the way he was treated on Hawaii, and speaks highly of the excellent service on the Inter-Island steamer Mauna Loa. STANDARD DICTIONARY.
