The Sons of St. George gave a smok er and entertainment to Oscar S. Swin nock of Los. Angeies, Cal., in their hall, Fort street, last evening. Mr. Swinnock is on his way to the Colonies and the members of the Song of St. George according to their usual cus tom, gave him a most hearty reception. He was so much impressed with the kindness and hospitality shown him, that he could not restrain the words of thanks that came to him and made a short speech that the members most heartily appreciated. The festivities of the evening started with a supper, aft er which came a musical program. The brotherly cup was passed around and good fellowship reigned on all sides. ?ilrnj; Work. Contractor Fred Harrison is improv ing splendidly an opportunity given him by Colonel Macfarlane to prove once again that in the line of making buildings he is a "hustler" premier. Mr. Harrison will in a short time now fin ish the two-story brick kitchen for the hotel. The new two-story cottage, on which a hard and fast time limit wa3 placed by Colonel Macfarlane, is, under the direction of Mr. Harrison, rising up as if by magic. Seldom in Honolulu has there been a chance to see such work. The lumber was rushed to the site and in a couple of days after the frame was up. Now the forces are put ting finishing touches on both the ex terior and interior and even, the plum bers have appeaed and are moving fast. Mr. Harrison will certainly have the work completed within contract time. Wet and Arrested. Antone Rosa and J. F. Col burn were arrested yesterday afternoon by Fish Inspector Keliipio for driving their car riage into the fishmariet proper. It was during the heavy rain that the two men named arrived at the market. Their's was a carriage without a top and to keep from getting wet they drove into the market from the side opposite the Electric Light station. They were immediately put under arrest and tak en to the police station. There the Fish Inspector claimed that ihe had been given notice by the Minister of the Interior to allow no carriages to go in- i to the place. The men arrested claim ed there was no law prohibiting their going into the market with a carriage and in this they are right. Mr. Kelii pio will make his complaint to the Min ister of the Interior ad interim. Messrs. Rosa and Colburri were allowed to go. Abies Trick Pencil. '"Lera" Abies was showing to Ed. R. Stackable and few other friends yes terday a new pencil that he picked up down in the Colonies. It is a heavy, bulky, odd looking affair, but is a won der in its way, as Mr. Abies readily de monstrates. With this pencil, by man ipulation of a rubber, Mr. Ahles is able to write any color. Being a good fel low he parts with the secret without money and without price, and considers it a good. advertisement for his busi ness. Mr. Abies has about made up liis mind 'that he will not return to the Colonies at all. Sailor Injured. At about 4:30 p. m. yesterday, one of sailors of the ship Iroquois, now at Sorenson's wharf, fell down the hold and was badly cut about the face and, it is believed, injured internally. The ship is empty so that the distance from which he fell was great. It is a for tunate thing he was not killed. The patrol wagon was sent to the ship and the injured man removed to the hospi tal. Exclusive Use. At the newly opened Criterion Bar ber Shop numbered shaving cups will be found which can be rented for a nominal sum, and thus insures the patron of having exclusive use of the cup. Interpreter. Judge C. F. Peterson did not arrive by the W. G. Hall as was confidently expected. He was at Waimea and could not get to the nearest port of depart ure of the steamer before her time of sailing. He is expected back on one of the small steamers that will arrive dur ing the week. This state of affairs makes it neces sary for Judge Wilcox to remain in the Police Court and J. E. Bush as trans lator in the House of Representative?.
