The last Rugby practice for the big
charity game to be played on the lea-
Jgiie baseball gounds in Makiki at 3:30
this afternoon, was held last evening.
All the men who have been drilling
were out and so many showed good
form that it was nomewhat difficult to
determine who should be left out of the
actual game. The sides were finally
made up, and for the line-up look to be
about equal.
The attendance for the game prom
ises to be large. All society as well as
all those interested in field sports are
anxious to see the initial performance
of the Island Rugbyites. Rev. Mr.
Lane will captain one team and A. St.
M. Mackintosh will lead the other.
The band will be on hand this after
noon by permission of Minister Cooper
and the gate price for the whole show
is but the small sum of two-bits. These
are the teams as selected last evening:

Weather and Sugar News Brought

The Mauna Loa arrived from Maui
and Hawaii ports yesterday morning,
after a very rough trip both ways.
Purser Tuft reports as follows:
"There is no sugar at Kau. There will
be about 200 bags of sugar for us on the
next trip. There was very rough
weather during the week. One boat
capsized at Punaluu and two natives
came near drowning. There were four
bales of hay and two barrels of cement
in it. The sugar left on Hawaii is as
follows: Honokaa, 9,000 bags; Kukui
haele, 2,700; Honomu, 15,000; Papai-
kou, 27,000. Papaikou has shut down.
The Iwalani can do nothing. The coast
is very rough. Lahaina has 4,000 bags
of sugar."
Wild Kona Coffee.
A letter from Kona contains the fol
lowing:
"There will be an enormous yield of
wild coffee from the Kona district. The
berries are very large and the coffee
is of excellent quality.
"A. Brimsley Sheridan has been do
ing the district thoroughly in the in
terests of coffee.
"J. Kaelemakule and W. Muller have
been over the mauka lands in Kona
setting valuations for the Govern
ment."
Street Ciardeni ncj.
The street taro and banana patch,
spoken of a few days ago in this paper,
is growing in size every day. The side
walks in the vicinity of Andrade's bak
ery shop on Punchbowl slopes, are 'now
being planted with the tropical plants.
It is thought by many that the joke is
being carried too far by the men con
cerned and that there will be some ar
rests soon.
Fined for Fighting.
Four Japanese were arrested Thurs
day night by Officer Lambert. They
pounced in upon an unsuspecting Jap
anese and his wife and just for the fun
o the thing, gave the couple a good
troucing. The four fighters appeared
in the Police Court yesterday morning.
Two were fined $5 and costs and the
other two, $10 and costs.
Circus Still On Hawaii.
Willison's circus will not return to
town until about the middle of the
month. Good luck on the other Islands,
combined with the reports of the bad
weather here, have caused Mr. Willi
son to change his mind about return
ing here so soon.
"Peanuts," the Japanese clown in the
circus is lonely. Ilis chum, Bobby, the
African baboon, is dead.
Police Court.
In the Police Court yesterday morn
ing, Ah Sin -was fined $23 and costs on
the charge of gambling.
J. K. Mahoahoa, discharged on the
charge of burglary, was rearrested on
the charge of larceny in the second de
gree. He appeared in the Police Court
yesterday and his case was postponed
until today.

Several Phases Are Now L'nJvr

There is being considered at the Ex-
jeeutive Building- not alone the pending
House act for $200 licenses for "light
wine and beer" establishments. It had
been the purpose of the Cabinet to
recommend legislation that would give
licenses to hotels in the outer districts.
It was not expected that the Govern
ment leaders would countenance in any
way an extension of the traffic by cheap
license for "wine and beer." A new
question, quite loea!, has been pre
sented. It is complained of one saloon
establishment in town that it is maintaining-
two distinct retail businesses
under one roof and wit'a but one
license. There is to be an investigation.
Some people are confident that the
act for the. ?200 licenses, will become
a law. At least one company has been
projected to operate in Honolulu and
on Kauai under the proposed new con
cession. A member of the hui is now
on the coast arranging for a new beer
and for cheap wine and perhaps for
other liquors. With this company it
is the plan, so soon as the passage of
the act is assured, to secure four lo
cations in Honolulu. One branch for
Kauai is on the list. A gentleman who
has considerable influence in the House
is said to be a silent member of the
