Marshal Brown has had a most novel and interesting experience in tracing the photograph of a $10 Hawaiian, treasury note. The officer, it was noted yesterday, had followed the bad bill thrcugh the hands of six Chinese firms and into the establishment of Bruce Waring & Co., and Lewers & Cooke. One of the young men in the employ of Lowers & Cooke surprised the Mar shal by satisfying him that the note had come to the lumber house right from the headquarters of the police department. It was made clear that the note was paid to Lewers & Cooke by Mr. Dow, chief clerk in the Mar shal's office. Mr. Dow, in turn, avers, that he drew the bill from the banking house of Bishop & Co. The bankers are utterly unable to throw any light on the hunt and it may be said that a to this particular ten, refused by Theo II. Davies & Co., the work of tracing is ended. No progress at all has been made in looking back for the $10 note found by Mr. Abel at Hyman Bros., or the $20 discovered at the Claus Spreck- els bank. Marshal Browin said yester day that in the search for the photo grapher he had met with several ob stacles, but hoped yet to place the criminality with the man Who did the wrork or with men who have been is suing the few notes sent out experi mentally. No bad bills were reported yesterday. Another case of expert and likewise successful forgery has engaged the at tention of a portion of the police de partment for fully six months now Innumerable clues have been followed and the officers are satisfied as to the offenders, but have been unable to se cure sufficient evidence. All the news paper readers will recall that from timis to time there have been ac counts of the sale of "bogus opium'" to Chinese by a ring of haoles. The con tainers in each instance were the same as those sold in the United States, but the stuff inside, instead of being the drug so highly prized by the Chinese, has in each case turned out to be a mixture of molassess and poi. Since taro became scarce, molasses alone has been used. The puzzle of the thing to the police has been that the tins have everv time been properly stamped. It was not believed that the revenue stamps could be secured from the United States and it is now know that the necessary gummed labels were made in Honolulu. The counterfeits were iust about perfect. Three colors are used on these stamps, and in the Hawaiian made mark, every color and detail appears correct. It Is doubtful if such an offense could be punished by statute, but the Marshal ihas naturally been anxious to break up the ring of -swindlers. One of two of the men are watched pretty closely by the police and one, after serving time in Oahu prison on conviction of burglary, has gone out of the jurisdiction of the Ha waiian Courts to reside. THISTLE EDITION. A New Set of Complete Works of Stevenson. The Scottish Thistle Club of this city has just received from the publishers, Harper & Bros., the firsi complete Thistle Edition of the works of the late Robert Louis Stevenson. There are 21 volumes in the set. itooert i.ou:s fcrevenson was an honorary chieftain of the Scottish Thistle Club and took a keen interest in the affairs of the organization. Dur ing one stay in Hawaii he was often in the club quarters and upon two oc casions at least, addressed the mem bers and guests. Of course he was charming fascinating. Mr. Stevenson seemed really proud of the badge of the club the insignia of the local or der of the Thistle. He was never with out the pin and it is known that he wished the badge buried with him and that this was done. It is more than likely that the great writer had in his mind the Thistle club when he had the emblem of the scoiety placed on some of his later books and that this taew choice set is called the Thistle edition is a circumstance peculiarly gratifying to the Scotsmen of Honolulu. Zealandia Departure. The Zealandia sailed for San Fran cisco promptly at noon yesterday. There was more than the usual gath ering on account of the large number of passengers who left. The band was present as usual and played a fare well concert. As the large gangway was about to be lowered, Mrs. W. Wag ener started down. "When she had ar rived about midway, the rope slipped out of the hands of the sailors and the gangway went down with a crash. Mrs. Wagener fell as soon as she struck the ground and had to be assisted in walk ing. She is very much lamed by the accident. Had the thing happened a few second before, several must surely have been hurt, for at that time there was a crowd on the gangway. BOCK BEER Is a treat indeed. That's delicious beer for yen. Awana was arrested Monday fore noon on the charge of unlawuful pos session of opium. Kaapa was in the Tong Hing Society building looking up a case when in popped Awana. He car ried a large bundle in his hand and whe"n confronted by the officer of the law, dropped it upon the floor. A search was made at once and in the bundle was found a lot of "insee," amounting in all to about $10 worth. Awana was fined $50 and costs in the Police Court yesterday. "A word to the wise is sufficient" and a word from the wise should be suffl cient, but you ask, who are the wise? Those who know. The oft repeated ex perience of trustworthy persons may be taken for knowledge, Mr. "W. M. Terry says Chamberlain's Cough Rem edy gives better satisfaction than any other In the market. Housekeepers all around are talking of the fine quality of goods bought at our Grocery Department. As the news spreads, so our groceries spread all over the city, from Waikiki to Palama; from the wharf to 'way up the valley. There is only one conclusion to be drawn, and that is: that the quality of goods must be right not only that, but the prices are right, the attention is right, and the goods are in the right condition.
