Fraw ley, the San Francisco theatrical man ager, who has been in New York sev eral weeks on the lookout for actors and piaj-s for his slock compay, will leave soon for Washington to visit his mother, and early in May will start for San Francisco, where the Frawley company will begin an engagement for three months and a halt the first week in June. Efforts have been made by Fried lander & Gottlob, who now control both the Columbia and Baldwin, to in duce Frawley to shift his company from the Columbia, where it made its reputation, to the other playhouses, which is larger. But that manager firmly believes he has built up a clien tele at the Columbia, just as Daniel Frohman has at the Lyceum here, and so he will not make the move request ed. Frawley says he will bring his stock company to New York in De cember. It will probably be seen at the Knickerbocker, Harry Mann's theatri cal palace. i K 1 1 M A X CO K UCIOX . Denuina Made ou Liberia for Injuries to a German. NEW YORK, March 31. Joseph Ilertzell, an American Methodist Bish op in Africa, whence he has just, re turned, brings the news that during his stay in Liberia, a German gunboat appeared at the place and demanded $11,500 indemnity for injuries to a Ger man subject viz., $3,500 for damages to his property, $3,500 if or threatening him with murder and $4,500 for costs of collection by means of a guncoat. President Coleman refused to pay, whereupon the commonder of the gun boat declared himself willing to relin quish the claim if Liberia would place herself under Germany's protectorate This was also refused and the Presi dent requested Bishop Hertzell to per suade England and the United States to protect Liberia from the intervention of Germany and France. The bishop has laid the matter before .the British Government a'nd will now also en deavor to arouse the interest of the American Government. More Uoats for United States. WASHINGTON, April 10. The na val appropriation bill, which was yes terday completed by the Senate sub committee on appropriations, carries increase in the navy and items for im provements which run the total of the measure 'some $8,000,000 above that fixed by the House. The most import ant cha'nges are the addition of four coast defense vessels, which, exclusive of armament, shall cost $1,250,000 each, and four torpedo boat destroyers to cost $300,000 each. This puts the con struction of additional ccean going ves sels at 3 battleships to cost ,$15,000, 000, four monitors $5,000,000, 1G torpedo boat destroyers $4,800,000 and 12 tor pedo boats $1,800,000. Itfendlmr Porto KIco. NEW YORK, April 10. A cable to the World from San Juan, Porto Rico, says: The entrance of the Vizcaya and Oquendo from Havana created srreat excitement. Preparations for coaling are being pushed, and seven steamers loaded with Cardiff coal are coming. The work of fortification pro gresses rapidly, and a system of coast heliographs has been established. The harbor "was mined during the week. The garrisons have received six months' rations and private families are buying large supplies of food. 4 Iluatiuclon Re-Elected. The Chronicle of April S says: The newly elected directors of the South ern Pacific Company met yesterday and organized by electing officers for the ensuing year. The election was har monious and uneventful except for one incident. Mrs. Jane L. Stanford brought all her influence into play to prevent the re-election of Collis P. Huntington to the presidency of the big corpora tion. Huntington was re-elected how ever, as were all the old officers of the company. Must Keep Peace. In the Police Court yesterday morn ing v. i-Jvans was ordered to turnisn bounds of $100 to keep the peace for one year, lie was arrested cn Monday on a warrant isworn out by his wife. On Sunday night his wife complained at the police station that he had threatened her, and mentioned the fact to the police that her husband had a gun in the house. Lieutenant Holi was sent up to his home and there found a rifle, which he took possession of. Sugar stocks most active the past ew days are Olowalu and Honokaa. There are also transactions in Oauu and a few others. Adam Duncan is reorsranizins: the Union baseball team. Several goccl men have been signed already. The finishing touches are being put on Tom K. James' additions to the Snow cottage premises. MAXAGKU Pleased Tourists. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Connor who have been here for about a month, returned to their home in the States on the Zea landia yesterday. Mr. Connor is a prominent banker in Colorado Springs, who came out to the Islands of the j Pacific with his wife, to spend a short vacation. They pased through here on the last trip of the Alameda to the Colonies and proceeded to Samoa, where they had a delightful time. While at that place, they collected photographs and took notes on what they saw. The same thing was done here. Mr. and Mrs. Connor return home with the feeling that they have had an excellent time. Mr. Connor is one of a company which has invested money in the Klondike. In a conversa tion with him aboard the steamer yes terday, he stated that he did not be lieve in the wholesale rush to the gold fields. Serious Charges. Cases against a native and a Portu guese, charging each with the practice cf surgery without license, are pending in the District Court. It is alleged by the Police Department that botih these men have been in questionable busi ness for some time-. Complaint was made to the officers that one said he had a certificate from the Board of Health and that the other claimed to be authorized as a.n expert surgeon by the Queen's Hospital.
