Esq., ex-Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, I have nominated and by and with the consent of the Cabin et do appoint him a Special Commis sioner of the Government of the Re- j public of Hawaii, for the purpose of in vestigating and reporting upon the various sources from which a desir able class of immigrants may be ob tained as laborers and settlers in the Hawaiian Islands. And I do authorize him in the pur suit of his investigations, to meet and confer with the authorities of various governments and' all other persons having such matters in charge. And I do hereby pray and request all persons in authority to favorably receive and, as there may be opportu nity, to assist him, the said Joseph Marsden, Esq., I offering to do the same to all those who shall in like manner he recommended to me. Pogue has gone to Maui and will not be back until Sunday. President and Mrs. Dole gave a large dinner party last evening. Rep. Kaeo was excused from the House yesterday on account of the ill ness of his wife. A volunteer offer of partonage of British residents for the Maine Fund baseball game is promptly made. If the sailing vessel Roderick Dhu has reached Hilo as expected, the peo ple over there have war news ahead of Honolulu. Chas. C. Desky is charged by the Hilo Herald with trying buy to up a controlling interest in the electric light plant of that town. Hilo harbor is to have a new aid stronger tug and Honolulu will prob ably be next. The Hilo tugs are own ed by a private corporation. In response to the appeal published in this paper yesterday, W. W. Hall has received several heavy contribu tions for the Hawaiian Board. Chas. Kreuter, the cornet soloist of the band is unable to give selections during this moonlight season on ac count of trouble with his lip. W. L. Hopper, secretary, gives no tice of a dividend due and payable to the stockholders of the Hawaiian Sugar Co., at the office of V. G. Irwin pj2o., Ltd., May 10.
