The makai wall of the present Progress Block will serve as the mau ka wall of the new. building. Arches will be made in this point wall and for the upper floors of the two blocks there will be used the same electric elevator. Mr. Cartwright had for some time con templated the offer of Mr. Desky for a piece of the big property at the corner of Fort and Beretania. ' A structure that will be handsome and well ap pointed in every way will go up as a companion to the Progress "building. A Chinaman was arrested early yes terday afternoon on the charge of lar ceny. He was caught stealing copper from the place near the Pacific Mail wharf, where the old piles from the wharf mentioned, now lie. Paul Jar ret found the Chinaman with the cop per in hand and immediately arrested him. The native watchman alleges that he saw the fellow with a couple of very large pieces. These were taken to the police station as evidence. The pieces found oh the Chinaman were simply stray hits that anyone might pick up without thinking very much about the matter. Deputy' Marsha Hitchcock thinks the prisoner is the same one who two or three weeks ago was arrested with about 75 pounds of copper in his possession. He was re leased at that time because no owner of the metal could be found. Paul Jarret states that copper thieves have been abroad of late. Some of the new piles over in the vicinity of the old fish market wharf have been completely stripped of the metal while copper from the old piles in the vici nity of the Pacific Mail wharf, has also been taken. A whole lot of good local interest has been aroused in the baseball game to be played on Thursday afternoon for the benefit of the Maine Fund. It is understood that the gross receipts will go into the moneys collected m the States for the relief of the families of the men lost with the U. S. Ship in Havana harbor. The ball teams to meet are nines from the.U. S. Gunboat Bennington and the Kamehameha School. An effort will be made to se cure music for the occasion.
