Telephone 157. 14.15 south. in ; An appealed cate of a native charged with violation of the liquor license law used nearly all of the Circuit Court time before Judge Perry yesterday. This little gem is selected from the questions and answers that passed dur ing the work of securing a jury of peers for the prisoner at bar: Q. Would you give any more cred ence to the story of a policeman than you would to the story of another per son not a policeman? A. I would not lean anv morp on a policeman if he was telling a lie if I knew it, than on anybody else. With the assistance of two lawyers and an interpreter the candidate for thf inrv lmr mnrlP it miitP rlpnr that he was willing to swear that he would not accredit an untruth knowingly. The witnesses for the State were chiefly policomen and informers. One of the men giving testimony in the case was questioned closely con cerning the illicit stuff purchased by himself Was it intoxicating? How did he know it was intoxicating? What were the effects of drinking the stuff? The boy on the stand said he knew syipes well ana was comment he had bought such on the occasion in ques tion. He drank copiusly of it, felt it "go all over him," and then "saw an gels." The mention of visions of an gels seemed to appeal very strongly to both Attorney Gear for the defense and Deputy Attorney General Dole. Bein called upon to give something of detail concerning the angels, witness said that some of them were celestial and others from Satan. He thought he re cognized one archangel he had met somewhere in haole literature. Even the name was given BETTER THAN EVER. Good Thiniis in the Hiiih School ' 1SOS Concert. Complete success has invariably crowned or rewarded the effort of Mr. J. Lightfoot as director and all others connected or identified with the annual concerts of the Honolulu High School. The single fault found heretofore was that the hall used was too small. On one occasion the concert had an au dience of 450 in the Y. M. C. A. assem bly hall. For this year there has been engaged from Mr. Desky the Progress hall in the new Progress block. The chairs are expected in a few days and then the concert date will be announc ed. Music is in the course at the High School and most of the pupils read readily. For the concert now to be given they have had the advantage of a year's training by Prof. J. W. Yarnd- ley. This means much when Mr. Lightfoot says that the school has bet ter voices than ever before. There will be some notable chorus singing with not less than seventy .voices. There will be five numbers, including a rollicking Viking song, a Slumber Song, a Good Night and "The Heavens are Telling," from Haydn's "Creation." Another new attraction this year will be tableaux under the direction , and training of Miss Cartwright, whose troop of young ladies won so much applause at the well remembered Strangers' Friend benefit entertain- ment at the Opera House some months ago. Besides the posing tliAro will lip one number with the young ladies that be a decided innovation for Ho- T I I nolulu. While Miss Cartwright reads the young ladies will illustrate a poem and there will be piano music as well O as lime light effects. 0 The program will include mandolin O solos, duets and trios. By the kind- ness of Minister cooper, captain tier- a . 1 i- j . f 1 . . 1 T ger s orcnesira irora me uuverumeui band will give a couple of selections. The proceeds of this entertainment will go to the purchase of a few pieces of statuary for the High School and for a stereopticon. The profits of for mer concerts have given the schools piano and electric lights. Rev. Dr. Herger's Lectures. Even the Y. M. C. A. devotional schedules have their special attrac- . rv i a. tions. One ot these win De onereu ai 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. This is the time of the regular meeting for men. usually a text is assigneu anu a leader opens the service and presides during the hour. There is always good music. Jast founuay tnere was deliv ered the first of a series of popular lectures. The speaker is Rev. Dr. M. T. Berger, D. D. This gentleman has traveled in many lands and is a fine talker. lie has spoken on "Through Palestine on Horseback." The topic to morrow afternoon will be "Egypt and Her Temples." While in Egypt quite recently Rev. Dr. Berger had excep tional opportunity to see more than the average tourists is shown.
