The Court on Inquiry convened by the President on the application of John Good , concluded its session Sat urday night. Some new testimony was presented. This came from witnesses called by the recorder. Lieut. CarJyle of H, formerly a sergeant in E, testi fied that he saw a number of times a sight in a locker in Good's bed room. Sergeant Stanmore, at present in E. testified to the same thing. Capt. Coyne, said the sight was lying around Good's room several days. Sergeant Taylor, Company E, saw the sight on Good's table once the day sight was found. J. D. Tucker was called in rebut-, tal. Kept a bottle of tonic in the locker mentioned by Carlyle and Stan- more during time they say they saw sight there. Did not see it there. Vis ited locker twice a day to get tonic. Mr. Robertson, attorney for Good stated that two affidavits corroborat ing Tucker's testimony could be filed. Leave was given to file the sworn statements not later than Wednesday afternoon of this week. Arguments were made by Mr. Rob ertson and Captain Kinney. Mr. Rob ertson contended that Mr. Good was convicted on circumstantial testimony and that there was every ground, even on the testimony given before the court martial, of reasonable doubt as to guilt. Captain Kinney spoke pretty plainly of the attitude in which the convicted man stood and held that no thing had been presented to warrant a reopening of the case. It is supposed that in a week or so the court will make a return to the President. Verv little interest has tak- en in the affair. While th& inquiry has been open to all caring to attend, there have been no spectators. All the at torneys in the case mentioned pardon in their arguments. The lawyers of the convicted man said he would not care to sue for pardon. This course was advised or suggested by the court recorder. FOR TWO TN THREE. Whitney has reduced the price on the Tourist's Guide from 73 cents to Another Argument for Harness Racing Change. A good many people who do not at all claim to be acnuainted with the fine points of horse racing, but who enjoy track contests and who always patronize the pastime, are becoming interested in the proposal to have here after all trotting and pacing events settled by best two heats in three in stead of best three in five. Said one of the interested persons yesterday: "Some people will argue that it seems ridiculous to alter down here in the Hawaiian Islands the rules that have been in force in the United States ever since trotting races began. As a matter of fact the reform originated over there. The United States has the harness racing centers of the world. For some time both breeders and the public have been asking for the change. It is being made. Califor nia may be said to be fairly represen tative in this matter. There has just been published the program for two weeks of racing at Oakland. It has C2 harness events and not a single one is a. three m five affair. There are listed some 50 of pacing and trot ting mile dashes. The remaining doz en are best two out of three heats. Oakland should be plenty good enough for Honolulu to pattern after. 'T maintain that there is really ab surdity in making two horses come out five times to compete for a purse, as has several times been the case here. In a two out of three race the best horse will win and that is not always so where it is three out of five. There will not be anything like the oppor tunity for making combinations when the dispute is to be settled in three heats. In the three in five method a couple of horses can be used against the best one and kill him off in a cou ple of heats. This is often done. "It seems reasonable to me that a horse beating his field twice shows his superiority as much as if he is punish ed several hours. Of course there is the other side, making the claim that 'skates and crabs' fit only for merry- go-rounds can be doctored up to go a couple of heats and best a really sound and good and valuable horse. The California men don't appear to think that this consideration should be reck oned, even in the matter of a dash. I tell you horses, winning or losing, are worked pretty hard in a race and thej cannot stand so much down here as in a cold country. Three heats is enough. "The public will hail the change with delight, for the three in five af fairs have become monotonous and un satisfactory. We cannot have racing many times a year in Hawaii and when there is a program it should have vari ety and should be run off in good time. Last Saturday the match, settled in three straight heats took an hour and a quarter. At the best possible rate you cannot nave more than two or three harness races in a day. Here, the matter will be settled, I suppose. y the executive committee of the Jockey Club. They should take everv- thing into the case and if they do I think they will vote for two in three heats. That ought to do for harness horses when runners go the dashes." Sub-Connnittcc Chairmen' .Make Reports and Success is Assured. Chairman W. J. Kc-nny, Acting British Commissioner and Consul General, presided at the Pacific Club on Saturday evening over the meeting of the chairmen of committees for the ball to be given at Independence rarh. tomorrow evening in honor of the 70th anniversary of Queen Victo ria's birthday. The report of the sale of tickets by the committeemen, and the ac ceptance of invitations by distinguish ed guests was very satisfactory; but it is hoped that all who desire to aid the funds of the British Benevolent Society will avail themselves of the opportunity of purchasing tickets to day or tomorrow, in preference to buy ing them at the door. The contract for supplying refresh ments has been awarded to Mr. and Mrs. T. Krouse of the Arlington, a sufficient guarantee for their excel lence. Mr. Robert Catton is at the head of the refreshment committee Today Mr. Geo. L. Dale, chairman of the decoration committee and his assistants commence their labors. io customary convenient arrange ments will be made by the Tramway's company. The grand march will take place at S o'clock or as soon thereafter as the guests have assembled. The promise of a most successful dance is now assured. Off for America. Gen. A. S. Hartwell, the attorney and cable factor, left for the States by the S. S. China on Saturday. He goes direct to Washington and it is supposed his mission is in the cable interest. At the Government build ing it was denied at once that Gen. Hartwell would in any way represent the Republic while abroad. Frank Hustace. of Hustace & Co., draymen, has gone to the States with his family. Mr. Hustace has bfien in baa nealth at different times for a year and a half and hopes with his physicians and friends that this trip will rid him of all sickness. Holy Land Travel. The fourth Holy Land travel lec ture had the largest audience of the season. It was delivered in the Y. M. C. A. assembly hall on Sunday after noon at 4 o'clock to men. Rev. M. L. Berger, D. D., was the speaker, and as the case before, there was special music. Rev. Mr. Berger has becomea great favorite with all in Honolulu and the young men particularly like now to hear him talk. He was very interest ing and instructive in telling of his trip from Jerusalem to Damascus and the Sea. He traveled under most favorable circumstances for observa tion and study and Lis presentation was graphic. s; v &r ' L' it L ft?
