On the ISth the dead body of Akina, a chinaman be tween 50 and CO years of asre. was found in Kahului river near the beach The cause of his death was not known. A number of Portuguese of Kokomo, Makawao, complain that the wide tire act will work a hardship on the poor man by compelling him to make the change trom narrow to wide tires. Heavy roars and rumbles, resem bling: connonading, on the other side of Lanai, caused Kula residents to fear that the Spanish were coming. They decided that it was only thun der. During the afternoon of the 19th, seventeen Makawao ladies attended a meeting of the Thursday Club held at the residence of Mrs. W. O. Aiken of Hamakuapoko. The program, ar ranged after suggestions by Miss Mc Donald of Honolulu treated of "George. Eliot." The program was as follows: Character Sketch, Mrs. Geo. E. Beck- with; Selections from "Mill on the Floss," by Miss Schweizer and Mrs. R. F. Engle: Vocal Solo, "Maid of the Mill," Miss Fleming; Poem, "Brother and Sister," Mrs. J. J. Hair. The meeting was most interesting and successful. The next assembling of the club will occur in three weeks at the residence of Mrs. D. C. Lindsay of Paia. The subject of "George Eliot" will again be taken up. The next jury term of Court will be held at "Wailuku beginning Wednes day, June 1st. The calendar is said to be short and to contain few im portant cases. Today, the Makawao Fence Commis sioners will decide the matter of fenc ing the boundary division line be tween Kula lands belonging to Erehorn Cattle Station and Awana. The H. C. Co. are putting in a third line of piers, thus broadening their landing at Kahului which now extends 240 or 250 feet into the bay. During the week the schooner Albert Myer arrived from Fort Brag, Cal., with a cargo of lumber for H. C. Co. She made the trip in 17 days. Today, the schooner Metha Nelson, Rice master, will sail for San Fran cisco with a cargo of Paia and Ha makuapoko sugar. For weather, unusually heavy trade winds prevail. A RAID. Police Make a Sudden Descent on Pake Gamblers. Deputy Marshal Chillingworth and about nine members of the police force made a raid on the gambling den sit uated in the rear part of the old Chi nese theatre Saturday night. There were promises of a very big haul, but as soon as the officers entered the theatre building on a run some of the Chinese communicated the fact to the gamblers in back so that, when the raiders reached the dens, they found only one occupied and the men in this were just leaving. The gambl ing apparatus were still on the tables but the yellow birds hd flown from the cages. In the occui '. d room some money and other objects of evidence were taken and about twenty men arrested and taken to the police sta tion. One very valuable fact, of impor tance to the Board of Health, was de veloped during the raid. As the Chinamen were running out, three ran for a hole near one of the outhouses and dropped into a lot of filth and slime before the officers could get hold of them. It seems that a greater part of the back yard of the theatre is nothing but a pest breeding hole cov ered with boards. REWARD OF MERIT. At the CHICAGO CYCLE SHOW in 1S37, each visitor on entering the Show was handed a coupon reading as below: "After viev.-ing the exhibits, kindly fill in the name of the Bicycle which pleases you best as regards beauty and mechanical merit, and deposit the coupon in ballot box near exits. Name of Bicycle " The "Shirk" received 17.4S9 ballots against 12,377 the next 'highest. When it is known that all the leading makes of wheels in the United States were on exhibition at this Show, the above speaks for itself. The HONOLULU BICYCLE CO. have secured the Agency for this strictly high grade wheel. IT WILL INTEREST YOU TO CALL AND SEE IT. The SHIRK is the best thing that ever happened. Garbage Removal Appropriation. Fish Inspector's Salary. Rep. Ai.hi reported as tollows tor the .Special committee to whom were referred petitions regarding the rec ords of courts in other than the First Circuit, as follows: "Upon inquiry made by us through the Chief Justice and the Chief Clerk of the court we find that the clerks of several circuits are working on to make new records of all the courts; but we believe the original records of the other circuits ought to be kept in Honolulu where the people can get all information they need in short time, and where the chief clerk con trols them at all times; the committee also believing that this Legislature will make an appropriation for a fire proof vault in the Department of the Judiciary." The consideration of the appropria tion bill was resumed. Upon consideration of the item of pay for fish inspector it was decided to raise the salary to $75 per month ur isuu ior tne two years, it was represented that Mr.1 Keliipio's was very important and responsible posi tion and also that the amount of work was very great; therefore he should be given a proper salary. The item of $1SOO passed unanimously. When it came to the item of $9,720 for pay roll, removing garbage, Rep. Pogue contended that owners of prop erty should be make to clean not only their yards but the sidewalks and streets outside of their places. The people of the outside districts should not be made to pay for the people in the city. They can be forced to do what they now have done for nothing by the Government. Rep. Gear moved for the passage of the item of $9,720 for the removal of garbage. Rep. McCandless suggested that pri vate individuals be allowed by the Government to carry on the business of removing garbage. It would how ever be wrong to strike out the item at the present time as there was no provision for a system to be carried on by private individuals. The item finally passed, Reps. Pogue, Richards and Paris voting in the negative. After consideration of the remainder of the items under the Board of Health, the House adjourned at 12 m. QUO VADIS! RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING. The supply of the "Celebrated Seat tle Bock Beer" is rapidly disappearing in town. The lovers of this nutri tious spring beverage can obtain it for a limited time at the Criterion Saloon.
