WHAT IS IT1

Any one of ordinary intelligence. A very few trials enable
any one to write upon it readily. Thereafter it is only a mat
ter of practice.
Fourth Army Corps to leave camp was
the Second Cavalry, and this was
quickly followed by the Third Infantry
and the Twentieth Infantry. These
troops marched to and through the city
to the water front, where the after
noon and part of the night were con
sumed in taking passage on the trans
ports Mattewa, Stillwater, Aransas,
Morgan and Breakwater.
General Bates is in command of the
expedition. The men are jubilant over
going to the front. The general im
pression among the men is that the
expedition is bound for Porto Rico.
The Eleventh and Nineteenth In
fantry were ordered to leave by rail
for Tampa, but the order was counter
manded. They, with the Fifth Caval
ry and one battalion of the Second
Cavalry, will probably leave tomorrow.
TENDERS FOR SUPPLIES.
SPANISH PAPER LOSES HOPE.
LONDON, June .4. According to a
dispatch from Madrid, El Heraldo,
with regard to the situation at San
tiago, says: "It is one more disen
chantment which proves that there is
no remedy for Spain's misfortunes.
Cervera's squadron at Santiago is of
little advantage either for itself or for
what it represents. It can neither
hinder the Yankee expedition nor
strengthen the defense of Havana.
Spain was never before led through
such a straight road to perdition."
TROOPS MAY BE SENT TO
PHILIPPINES.
MADRID, June 3. In the Chamber
of Deputies today Lieutenant-General
Correa, Minister of War, in reply to an
inquiry as to whether a Spanish ex
pedition would be sent to the Philip
pines, said the Government was deliberating.

SIGNS OF EARLY PEACE.
WASHINGTON, June 4 The peace
signs have been multiplying. There
has been a notable change in the
tone of the Spanish press, and, al
though up to this moment no advances
have been made to the State Depart
ment by any of the European powers,
there is an indefinable suggestion in
the air that any. moment may bring
forth overtures of this kind. For this
reason the campaign against Porto
Rico will probably be hurried, in order
to insure its possession by the United
States before peace is attained.
