The Italian cruiser Etna is anchored near the light house, having arrived yesterday morning ai 11 o'clock from San Francisco, after a ten days' stormy passage. The Etna arrived in San Francisco last month from a cruise from Italy to Spain and the Maderia Islands; thence along the east coast of South America through the straits of Magellan, up the west coast of South and Central Amer ica and to Mare Island, where she went on the dry dock. The Etna is a first class cruiser of about To feet length, 42 feet beam and :i0 feet depth. She is of C,."i00 tons reg ister, T.mOO horse power, twin screw and has a speed of 111'- knots an hour. She is provide! with two sets of en gines. Her hull is painted black down to the water iine. her -upper works white. She has two yellow smoke stacks, both well amidships, and two turretted masts provided with rapid firing guns. She has a protected dtok and her armament consists 01 two 10-incn guns, six 6-inch guns, five Xordenfeldt rapid-firing guns and four Hotchkiss rapid-firing guns. The Etna received a salute from the United States gunboat Bennington. now anchored in naval row, and the Italian flag was run up. Commander Taussig, of the gunboat, called upon the Etna soon after and extended greetings. The Italian cruiser carries twenty of ficers anil 300 men. The Etna's officers are as follows: Capitano li Vajcello, Cavallare Gio- vanni uioveno. commanuer; capitano di Corvetta, Cavallare Stanislav Lor- eichio, second in command; Frank Angelo, first lieutenant; Guglielmo Giamelli, second lieutenant; Ernesto Di Loreto, third lieutenant; Ginseppe Monrey, fourth lieutenant, and Guido Scelsi, fifth lieutenant; Ettore Coltel- leti and Federico Cajtraeane, sub-lieutenants; Lorenjo Gandolofo, Domenico Visco. The Etna remains in port about ten days, proceeding from here to Samoa, Fiji, and thence to Sydney. Italian Consul F. A.
