A Sun cable from London says: Popular irrita tion over the folly and bigotry which aro sacrificing valuable lives in the name of so-called Christian science, is becoming very strong in this country. The fad is a new growth in England, and its votaries are few compared with the number of followers which it gained in America when the craze was at its height ten or twelve years ago. Christian science differs scarcely at all in its principles and teachings from the doctrines of "the peculiar people," a much humbler class of faith-curists, whose representatives frequently fig ure in English police courts upon com plaints of societies for the protection J. R. Shaw, D.V.S. Kit an v thr neonle. I know a .bun u mjt-mm j m M. dred reasons why we should be friends; none why we should 'be otherwise, and believe that has been the true teeiing of this country towards tne unuea States for many years. All misunder standings have been happily removed, and the combination of tne two Eng lish-speaking nations would fear no other alliance. "Our imagination must be fired when we contemplate the possibility of such a cordial understanding between the 70,000,000 people of the United States and our 50,000,000 Britons an under standing whih would guarantee peace and civilization to the world. We shall welcome the United States in their new career as a colonizing nation because we know they are animated by the same motives and aspirations, employ the same methods and love justice as ourselves, and euchva new departure will doubtless, as Lord Salisbury has said, serve our interests, not in any selfish or mercenary sense, but because it will give each better understanding of the other's work, Increase our sym pathies, bring us closer together and make easy and inevitable that most de sirable co-operation." Petition Against Acquisition Will Be Lodged. CHICAGO, Dec. 21. A conference be tween the officers of the American Sugar drawers' Society and manufac turers of beet sugar machinery and rep resentatives of the beet sugar factories now in operation, was held in the office of the Orange Judd Farmer, in the Mar quette -building. The question under consideration was the effect of the pro posed annexation of sugar proaucmg territory in the West Indies and the Philippines upon the development of American sugar producing interests. The sentiment was unanimous that the acquisition of tropical sugar terri tory would seriously affect the develop ment of the beet sugar industry unless, some arrangements were made which would Drotect the domestic product against the operation of free trade in sugar from the new colonies. It was decided to make a formal protest to Congress against the sacrifice of the in terests of American farmers, labor and capital for the benefit of tropical re gions. A committee was appointed to draw up a formal petition to Congress protesting against the acquisition of territory. ant faddists are often punished by fine or imprisonment for neglecting to pro vide proper medical care for their children or others dependent upon them in case of illness. Now that Christian science is gain ing a foothold among persons presum ably of a higher grade of intelligence, and is carrying the dangers of the pos session of a little knowledge to the point of technical manslaughter, so ciety is naturally becoming exasperat ed and is demanding a stern legal re pression of the mischief. Hence it is that the death of Harold Frederic has developed into a test case against the leaders of the movement. Meantime an English investigator has discovered that so-called Christian science does not even possess the first merit claimed for it, namely, an origin in the teachings of Christ in the New Testament. Christian science of to day is, in fact, merely a revival of the Babylonian medical beliefs of 3,000 years ago. The only change of im portance is that, naturally, God and Christ have been substituted for the ancient gods or spirits. The Babylon ians of 3,000 years ago had a very common and widespread belief that nature was a realm under the sway of two camps of spirits, one benevolent, the other malevolent. According as one or the other prevailed, the Baby lonian was well or ill. At the banquet given by the officers of the Third Jeorgia Regiment to Postmaster-General Smith this afternoon Gen eral Shafter had some interesting things to say about Cuba and the Cub ans. He did not make a speech, but in aconservational way expressed him self, his remarks being nominally ad dressed to Colonel Berner of the Geor gians though they were Intended for the whole assemblage. "It seems to me," said General Shaf ter, "that a great many persons have an erroneous idea respecting our re lations with the Cubans. As I view it, we have taken Spain's war upon our selves. We shall in all probability hear a good deal more of the 'insur- "How about self-government for the nnhans?" General Shafter was asked. "Self-government," the General re peated.
