lice last night. No serious cases.
The Government band will give a
-concert at Emma Square this evening.
There was a fair amount f. celebra
tion noise on the streets to a late hour
last night.
Nearly all of the" business houses
"were closed yesterday on account of the
holiday.
The Oahu Railway did a big holiday
excursion business to Kahuku and in
termediate points.
C. H. Brown, of Hollister & Co.,
since his return from abroad, has been
quite ill with a cold.
It is during this month that returns
must be made to the tax assessors
throughout the Islands.
'Hawaiian Lodge No. 21 will hold a
special meeting tonight at .7:30 o'clock.
Work in the 2nd degree.
Court Hawaii, Independent Order of
Foresters, will install tonight the of
ficers elected to serve this year.

program last evening. Every act was

was quite seriously injured.

were fears that (he would soon die.
The customs house waterfront force
was delighted with Surveyor Strate
meyer's arrangement for a day off for
all hands during the holiday season.

for the boat house.
The appointment of Mr. Ovenden as
second deputy tax assessor and col
lector for this district has been an
nounced. Mr. Ovenden has been in the
tax office several months.
At St. Louis college there is again
shown a scene in the Holy Land. It
may be viewed at the theater by all
callers. On Friday evening a concert
-will be given at the college.
The Hawaiian Rifle Association will
have its big tournament on January 17.
The ranee is now oDen for practice
every day from 8 in the morning till
sunset. The butts are at Kakaako.
When the Japanese here get their
home papers next they will quit object

passenger department of the Oahu Rail
way that the Waialua hotel and "re
fectory" will open next month. Guilt
for the word refectory lies between
Col. Iaukea and Passenger Agent
Smith.
Court at Hilo.
The first term of court to be presid
ed over by Hon. Gardner K. Wilder,
the new circuit judge, will be opened
at Hilo tomorrow. There are some
fifty-seven cases on the calendar, be
sides a number of divorce libels. There
are quite a number of criminal cases
on the list. The defendants, with
single exception are Hawaiians, Jap
anese or Chinese. And the only "for
eigner" accused is a Greek, indicted
for selling liquor without a license. It
is seen from the calendar that in a
number of the criminal cases outside
counsel has been engaged to assist the
