Intelligence and Industry. Til.: "SaiithfleM" hams, recently placed on sale in this market, are pre pared in the little town of Smithfiehl. Virginia, in Isle of Wight County ou the south bank of the James river. The place is noted in Church history, for an ancient edifice built in 1S32 with brick imported from England by the early colonists. It was the second Church building erected in the State. It was used by soldiers of both sides in the Civil War as barracks. A mo nument was made several years ago by the Episcopal Church to restore the building and maintain it as a me mento of the early days. Half a century ago, a planter living in the town, after careful experiments, succeeded in preparing a ham, which in the delicacy of its flavor surpassed all other hams' in the market. He used the common "razor backed" hogs, but fed them on acorns for some weeks previous to slaughtering them. He also reduced the fatty meat. His prep ation of the hams was by a method of his own. In the course of time, these 'hams obtained a great reputa tion. Not only in the South, but in the North, they were used by the richest people. During the civil war, the busi ness entirely ceased. After the close of the war, it was resumed, but under great difficulties. The "razor backs" had been killed off during the war, and the breed had to be restored. Cut the skill and experience in the prepar ation of the hams remained. The fash ionable people residing in Newport, R. I., for some years took a large part of the product. In -Washington and Baltimore, this special article is in de mand. The town of Smithfield. now de pends largely for its prosperity upon this industry. In other places, enter prising men have made efforts to pro duce a similar article, but as a rule they have not succeeded. They have failed to secure the precise knowledge, and skill possessed by the Smithfield makers. This industry illustrates the value of intelligence and skill, which creates a monopoly in the trade. LONGFELLOW AS A PARODIST. In the first number of the "Atlantic Monthly," forty years ago, Ralph Wal do Emerson, says the Boston Com mercial, has a poem called "Brahma," which puzzled both critics and common readers. Some said it was the greatest poem of the century; some said it was nonsense. The first verse ran as fol lows: If the red slayer think he slays, Or if the slain think he is slain, They know not well the subtle ways I keep, and pass, and turn again. That winter it happened that a rela tive of the poet Longfellow, living in another State, bought a sleigh, and in a family letter to the cousins in Cam bridge there was a wail lest the Janu ary thaw which had follow the pur chase should keep them from enjoying the gay cutter that season. When the letter was answered Longfellow con tributed this verse, which, it is said, has never been printed before: TO ON THE PURCHASE OF A SLEIGH. If the red sleigher think he sleighs. Or if the sleighin think it is sleighin' They know not well the subtle ways Of snow, that comes and goes again. ADAMS UNSAFE. The San Francisco Call says: The United States training ship Adams is not likely to go to Samoa or any port far away from home. She may go to Magdalen for gun practice, but the authorities may not even allow her to go that far. Her spar deck beams have opened up and other defects have shown themselves, so the vessel is not now considered safe for a long voyage. The starting of the deck beams is at tributed to the constant drilling of 200 naval apprentices on, the spar deck. Kaahumanu Street. A ill nra i i mm s mmw Mm HXCHIEF OF POLICE JOHN M'CULLAGIT.
