We find the storv of the Prodigal Son shad owed by 'The Two Gentlemen From Verona'; 'King Lear' embodies the old conception of Job; 'Lady Macbeth, the Jezebel of old. He frequently refers to Christ and to his atonement for human sin. In fact, the sublimity of the death upon the -cross seems to have taken a powerful hold upon Shake speare. Above all, he expounds human nature. In Shylock we see avarice and shrewdness, in Macbeth the results of ambition, in King Richard, villainy; in the daughters of King Lear, filial in gratitude; in Othello, jealousy. "Hamlet offers an awful exhibition of opportunity lost. The first general theological thought that we draw from all of these plays is the thought of sin and its conseqiiences. Remember that Shakespeare lived in a free and easy age, when priests were corrupt and kings rotten. Into this pit of corrupr tion he dipped his pen as a hook and brought up awful revelations. He dis closes, not as Dante, the hell of the fu- expert artists, with sharp ture but the hell of the present; the tools, visit the Silent Barber sin which lays its red hand on thrones ana crauies, ana corrupts an u .luutucs. Always he keeps before us the gospel of transgressed law, and the law of retribution which follows it. "Shakespeare wras not a Puritan, but he deals with the severest truth of Pur itanism. Witness the destruction of his great characters. Antony and Cleo patra die horrible deaths. Shyloek srooi?. face to face Avith justice. Mac- tZJ 7 beth perished on the field of battle. The uncertain crown of Richard is crushed, and he becomes the victim of his villinnv. Shakesneare has not drawn the geography of the future, but he has made plain the heaven and hell of the human soul." The speaker went on to trace the noble conception of Divine mercy as defined by Portia. While he drew no parallel between the inspiration of the great dramatist and the inspired writ ers of the New Testament, he declared that the Gospel of Shakespeake was IN NEED Of a good, clean shave by Havana. It has been calculated tnat 110 sugar houses were destroyed during the insurrection. Were these sugar houses to be repaired each would re quire from $30,000 to ? 50,000. All re pairs necessary could not be made with $50,000,000. After a stable government is given to Cuba, able to secune life and property, it can be seen that in this branch of trade alone there are pros pects for American Engineers, con tractors and manufacturers. Many of the bmildings used by the factories that were destroyed -were built of tim ber; these will no doubt be replaced by iron and steel structures. Then, as many of the large pieces of machinery have not been affected by the destruc tion of the buildings, the repairs will consist in many instances of. minor pieces and the connection of pipes, etc. In the electrical line the field will be quite extensive among the sugar es tates, as in the major part of them all electrical fittings were destroyed. Of the 1,000 miles of track on the island, the largest portion of it needs new rails and other material, and the rolling stock of all roads, according to the best authorities, needs to be replen ished with new equipment. There are already thousands of tons of freight being held for shipment after the first of next month, and, with what is being added, it seems as though there would hardly be adequate shipping facilities to handle it. ms&im AND MONUMENTAL CO.
