Some time ago I forwarded some of
these diseased coffee leaves to IJ. T.
Galloway, chief of United States Divi
sion of Vegetable Physiology and Path
ology, at Washington. I am in receipt
of a reply from Mr. Galloway in which
he states that the leaves show a fungus
which ha3 leen described under th
name of "Cercospora Coffeioola." The
chief says that the fungus is elo.i'dy re
lated to one which occurs on celery ln
the United States and causes consider
able injury to the leaves. Other fungi
j of the same group occur on the cherry
and the almond and can? the leaves
to drop off, he says.

Professor Koebele speaks very hop.
fully of coffee. The two diseases men
tioned are but very slight blights and
can be easily taken care of. Olaa dis
trict, he found to be in a very satis
factory condition. There is every
promise of a great coffee production in
the near future. The elevation of :i
laige proportion of the district make?
the age of bearing much later than on
the lowlands. The Professor still be
lieves there is too much rain there,
but finds the moisture decreasing as
the country is opened up. The Kona
district is in fine condition, there lin
ing little or no blight there. The com
ing crop will b iho large?, cv- r
fathered.
The planting of sugar can is in pro
gress about Kailua. Both cane and
coffee are growing to an advantage a-
high as 3.300 feet in the Kona districts.
