Wm. M. Kincaid continued his talks on "Man," his subject for tlu; evening being "A Man at Work." The text was Eph. 4:2S, "Let him that stole. steal no more, but rather let him labor. working with his hands the thing which 13 good, that he may have to give to him that necdeth." There is a great deal of stealing go ing on in this world bosMcs that which is regularly termed theft. It is car ried on openly, day in and day out, and people generally accept It. Man does not like work. The dreams of men are of ideal places where there Is no work and Heaven is generally thought of as a place where there is no work. That view is barbarous. Places where work Is not necessary have been found, but barbarism reigns in them. After twenty or thirty years life In harness a man grows accustomed to work and is unhappy unless engaged in doing something. Adam was a bar barian. He bad no work to do, and no idea of right and wrong. Dreams of lotus-eaters, of Edens, are animalisms. Work develops and cultivates man into mastery of himself and others. It is not a curse. Work is the bes; bles sing of man. Many people.do not work on account of the low esteem In which work is held. Labor has had a hard time in the world. But the ag Is coming when the true dignity of labor will be established, when work will not be considered drudgery. ' There Is a false democracy coming to the front. "I am as good as the next man; we are all free and equal." These are the common expressions of today. But that is not so. Too many men aw slaves of their environment. Men are not equal In size, virtue or productive work. But every man has an equal right to be free wherever the Ameri can flag floats. There will always be toilers with the head and the hand and both will be honorable. Why should a man work? For de velopment, for soul culture. Work has brought forth the grandest and the greatest of the human race a Shake speare, an Angelo, a Jesus. Manhood, physical, moral and spiritual, depends on work. Is work A degradation? It is the brightest angel In the world to ri a y. There is a tendency today to get as much money as possible for the least amount of work. The rush for specula tion is too great. This love lor the element of chance has been very active in the last few days In this city. Be ware, for "bucking the tiger" generally ends In the tiger eating the man. Keep rigidly to any good purpose, but along legitimate lines. Alas for men whose lives are aim less, purposeless, '"hough their bodies be known their lives may be marked unknown. The blacksmith, with his horny hands, is as much above the polished man scornful of work, as the heavens are above the earth. Thank God, America is a nation of workingmen. Men of manhood, men of brain and brawn are needed today. It is a grand thing to be able at the end to hold up one's hands and ay that they have never owned a penny that was not earned. -:- 93 FORT STREET. -:- Telephone, 22 : : : P. O. Box. 470.
