The fiit lecture of th Y. M. C. A.
course given Saturday night was most
interesting ami successful. 'A large
crowd turned out to bear Col. Albert
Wnyte discourse upon ".Mining in the
Klondike." -Tho stereopticon
nicely and the slides shown were full
of interest. Prof. Light foot deserves
credit for his. success with the stere
opticon. The cornet solo and piano se
lections were also very well rendered.
Following are some brief extracts from
Col. Wihyte's interesting lecture:
Placer mining, the uncovering and
separating from gravel by wash of
water tne nuggets and practices of gold
milled by grind of glacier and torrent,
is the more enticing and popular kind
of mining because it Is that kind In
which the poor man may become sud
denly enriched. And eo a Utile les
han two years ago when the Klondike
pvrr brolre out. there was such a
mad nioh for gold from all quarters
of the globe as is without a parallel in
the 'history of the world.
The lecturere explained the ori&in of
certain name of places, aman; the
most interesting of which w-s Dyca.
A party cf Indians having arrived a;
the coast from eheep camp, a number
died. The survivors gave It the imu.in
nam Tva. which means to die. Thi
has been corrupted to Dyca. The sum
mit of the famous Chilcoot paH was
then shown, in which so many bravo
hearts Hiavo perished.
An interesting view was that of Flf-
pointed. The instruction. a this of
ficial will be to report violatloni of
regulations to the Hoard of Health peo
ple and unless heed U paid at oar
there will be prosecutions of tho who
permit nuisances or are respon;t"e for

City was shown, taken at a time when
there were not more than a dozen log
houses in the town, and the greater
number of 3000 people were living in
tents. Col. Whyto told a sad story
of two brovhera who worked for
months in the struggle for wealth. At
last fortune smiled. They were rich
men. iJut they had no sooner returned
to Dawson City than the dread typhoid
was upon them and death came soon

The largest cariboo ever killed in

in spring to the coast in droves of
thousands, returning to the interior In
winter. One dressed weighs from 300
to 400 pounds and its flesh is Juicy and
tender with a flavor resembling that
of deer.
Many views of claims on the famous
Bonanza creek - were shown and Col.
Whyte told many interesting incidents
of jthe great struggle. How men about
to give up became wealthy In a day
and how men did give up only to see
their claims turn out fabulously rich
when it was too late. He delineated
tho sufferings, the hardships endured,
and tho vice and the valor of tne
men. In conclusion he said:
"Tho time hast not yet come for
writing the history of the mad, reck
less rush to t.e Klondike. Nor can it
until his winter's snows give up their
treasures,, their disappointments and
their dead. It will bo a story where
the noblest human virtues touch el
bows with the vltost Qiuman vices. H
will be a story in which tragedy pre
dominates and which has cost more
life and brought more sorrow to Am
erican homes than the war with
Spain."

Water at Kihci.
L A. Thurston, who is quite heavily
interested in the new Kihel plantation,
returned on Saturday from a visit to
the Maul estate of the company. De
velopment of the water Is progressing
in a most satisfactory manner. The
second large pump is at work, yet the
greatest difficulty is encountered In
keeping the shaft or tunnel in such
condition that the men may work in
the drifts. W. F. Pogue, the manager,
is showing commendable and effective
energy in preparing for the planting of
cane.
on certain mars-h lands near Honolulu.
The sewerage of Front utrcet also
came in for discussion. There 4s $IOo
available for sewcrag? purposes and
though this cannot ho expected to go
very far. It can either be applied to fur
nish a complete system for a portion of
Front street, which will be connected
with the Walanuenue street sewer, or
can le used to furnish a more or less
complete surface drainage for th
whole of Front street.
Mr. Smith referred to tbc gubage so
generally found In the rear of business
nnd dwelling houses, and this not alone
among the Portuguese and Aslatlrs. but
in the nelghliorhood of those supposed
to know better. He Is Incline ! to think
that efforts on the part of Hiloites
which would result in the removal of
such garbage would have a better efleci
on public health than even the drain
age of the Walolama pond or the
building of the Front street sewerage.
Dr. Uusel wanted to discuss the
Portuguese worm, but Mr. Smith re
fused to consider the animal. He said
subsequently that the trouble with
Hlio people generally was that they
had worms, which accounted for a good
deal of thetr "kicking.
The matter of widening and extend
ing Front ami Shlpman streets, leading
to the new fish market, was mentioned,
for the reason that otherwise the new
market would not be extensively pat
ronized and consequently the present
fish stand nuisance would be continued
on Front street. Mr. Smith said this
should certainly be done, and If a peti
tion were sent to the Minister o the
Interior, for a "portion of the appro
priation passed by the last legislature
for ssreet widening and extension, it
would probably bo granted.
