Successful Experiment by Dr. Tflffier in Paris. A dead man has been brought to life in this city. It was done by surgery and .mechanical means. The man Atfho performed .the operation is Dr. Tuffier, of the Hospital de la Pitiie. Dr. Tuf- fier manipulates the 'heart of the' dead! and thereby restores the circulation, life and consciousness. He had pre- viously accomplished this successfully with numbers of warm-blooded dower animals. Associated with :him In these experiments are his assistant, Dr. Du mort, and Dr. Hallion of the College de France. They state that they have restored life to fifty animals. Recently Dr. Tuffier was lecturing in the Hos pital de la Pitie when word was brought to him that one of the patients had just died. This was Jean Soulie, an artist aged 24. He died of appen dicitis. His previous (health had been fair and n.s heart was sound. The man was "scientifically dead." The most delicate instruments failed to de tect either pulse or respiration. The tests w!hich surgeons know and whicn are absolute as for instance scorch ing the skin of one of the extremities were resorted to. The result of the test was to show that the man iwais dead. It was then that Dr. Tuffier surround ed by pupils, performed such an opera tion as nearer before lias been attempt ea upon man. He iaia Dare with a stroke of 'his scalpel tEe tissues over lying the fifth and sixth ribs of the left side. His assistants applied tenacula two-pronged hooks for drawing mem brances aside from the field of opera- tion and pulled the fleshy covering of the bones to one side. The surgeon picked -tip a small saw and severed the bony part of the two ribs; a heavy pair of cutting pliers performed the same work on the cartilaginous portions, the scalpel passed quickly around the freed ends and the liberated piece was lifted ircwu cavity. inus was made a . i mi. - gateway to the very center of life. With carved scissors Dr. Tuffier in cised the pleural cavity and there lay beneath ihas ihand the surface of the lower lobe of the left lung. A dittle higher up and to the left could be seen the apex of the heart. There was no movement in the heart, none in -the lungs. "You see, gentlemen," said Dr. Tuf fier, 'the condition of both heart and lungs shows that the subject is dead." While he talked and as the pupils ooked, Dr. Tuffier, with a nandful of ittle tweezers, was busy about the wound in the patient's side. A series : of short clicks followed his deft hands and as lie brouglht tihem away it was sAPirv that to tih md of evrv smnll I vein tnere nung a mtie pair oriemo- static forceps whlca could check any How of blood. ( It had taken a minute or two' 'o do these things, but there was no move ment from the body under the sur geon's hands. The eyes were half opened, but a watching student had failed to detect any change in the pu pils from he first touch cf the knife until the'last. In a few minutes, under the skilful manipulation of the doctor, signs of eturning consciousness were observed, and it was scon evident that the sub ret was again alive. The patient was emoved from the operating room to his bed in the hospital ami .continued to show signs of improvement, and there is .liope that he may finally be restored to health. TESTS PATIENCE. The Most Patient People Must Show Annoyance at Times. Nothing spoils a good disposition quicker. Nothing taxes a man's patience Like any itchiness of the skin. Itching piles almost drive you crazy. All day they make you miserable. All night they keep you awake. Itch. Itch.-Itch. With no relief. Just the same with Eczema. Can hardly keep from scratching it. You would do so, but you know it makes it worse. Such miseries are dailiy decreasing. People are learning they can be cured. Learning the merits of Doan's Oint ment. Plenty of proof that Doan's Ointment will cure piles, eczema, or any itchiness of the skin. Mr. I. G. Kase, of S17 Commerce strcec, CanonsDurg, Pa., dealer in pianos, organs and musical instru ments, savs: "I was greatly annoyed witn ah irritation or wreaking out ot the skin, called by some tetter or ec zema, l read about ooan's Ointment and on inquiring of a friend it it was reliable I was toid that everybody who had used it was much pleased and spoke highly ot -its curative effects. Procuring a box, an applacation or two stopped the itching and finally dried up the inflamed places. It had broken out on my face and on my breast, but not a trace of it remained. Doan's Ointment can be depended upon, for it cured me after everything else failed." Doan's Ointment, lor sale by all deal ers. Price, GO cents per box.
