Scores Two Nations and Justice Chambers. LONDON, May 2. Robei t Louis Ste venson's widow has written a :er.tei co the Westminster Gazette from Func'.iai. Madeira, on the bombardment of Sa moan villages by British r-.Lil An?erican warship?. Mrs. Stevenson says: '-presidenc McKinley allowed no fir.i.g on Cuban towns unless they gave ictive cause of offense, and Commodore Watson v.a? ordered not to attack undefended Span ish cities-. Does the President kei?i". his humanity for civilized countries alone?" Mrs. Stevenson deo'ares th it thv Sa moan villages are inhabiied iu time of war by non-combatants, ";ho have to choose between the saells cf the wor ships and "taking to the bush." Under such conditions, -sue says, -'elicate women can hardly exit. v. lr'b chiidiea die like flies. Mrs. Steve Eso:is lector concludes as follows: "Chief Justice Chambers has been represented n;; saying in a lefler to his brother, 'Inever was happier.' He must be a person singularly devoii of imagination if he ever pictured to himself the scenes being enaere-il :n :he bombardment of -those villages; the ex- I odus of panic-stricken people rushing hither and thithvr; shells burs-tin.; everywhere, the cries of bedridden and hapless wounded people burning aliv? in their blazing houses; women in th-? pangs of childbirth, mangLsd children crawling on the sands, the sea be Core them and the bush behind them. And we read that the woods also were shelled. Who is to be held accountable for these de-edsthat disgrace both'Eng land and America?" BOOK-BINDING COLORS. A bookseller has been telling Litera ture that the color of the binding has a great deal to do with the success of a book. Red books sell. The great mass of bookbuyers, of course excluding, the few who really know something about books, judge by appearances. Drab and gray and brown books are . - - AT 12 O'CLOCK NOON. N 3 A N so So S9 not inviting to look upon, and they do not sell easily. Green makes a better showing and books in blue will gener ally find a buyer, but red books have always the best sales. Terhap?, after all, it is not a bad p'.an when you know no:hing of the book you are buying to buy it because of its color. Color is always essentially suggestive. Red is bright, warm and good to look upon, and it is well that the binding of books in dvab should be discouraged. FLOWER CLOCK. The Opening and Closing of the Flow ers Tells the Time of Day. The phenomenon of certain species of flowers opening and clewing at parti cular hours has been utilized by an J Ohio landscape gardeaer to add a unigue decoration to the grounds or John D. Rockefeller's country seat at Tarrytown. It consists of a flower bed which can be used as a clock. . The bed is circular and divided into twelve parts. Each part contains a figure composed cf a flower which opens or closes at the corresponding hour. Thus the 2 space is occupied by a II made of hawkseed, which closes at 2 P. M. precisely. The hands, of course, are stationary and merely ornamental. They are composed of the common yellow da delion, which opens at 5:30 A. M. and closes at 8:30 P. M. They points to arrangements of flowers re presenting these figures. There has been no difficulty in find ing flowers to suit the various hours, and in some cases th.e figure has been made up of more than one flower. Among those that have been used are the snow thistle, that closes at 1 P. M; the sow thistle, that opens at 5 A. M. and begin to close at 11, but does not fully close until noon; the yellow goat's beard, which opens at 4 A. M. and closes at 4 P. M. with such accu racy that in some of the poorer dis tricts of Scotland where there are no clocke the children are dismissed from school by ii; the blue chicory, which opens ot 4 A. M., turns white at sun rise and closes at noon; the morning glory, pnppy, waterlily, mmpernal, and marigold opening at 5 A. M., 7 A. M., S A. M., and 9 A. M., respectively; the star of Bethlehem, which closes at 11; passion flower, which opens at noon, the beauty of the night, which opens at 5 P. M.,the evening primrose, winch opens at C; he white lychnis, opening at G, .and the blue convolvulus at 2 A.M. This clock is so arranged that from a distance it looks like an ordinary flower bed, but on close inspection no ne could mistake it for anything other than what it is.
