Correspondent Claims Any Numbei of Laborers Can be Obtained Through Proper Channels. Lditor Advertiser: IJeing a reader of your paper, I couldn't but notice the article published on Friday, and also to feel gratified in knowing that there are some of the planters in thesfi Isl ands who think the Portuguese labor ers the best they ever had, and will ever have, for that matter. Then, as sucn is the case, why not try to get more of them? Why should the plan ters experiment with the Italians (whom we don't know if they will be adaptable to these' Islands or the work required here) when, by a proper representation made by an agent, such as Minister Damon, we would ob tain more of these desirable Portu guese? A' steamer is due here in a few clays with about 100 Portuguese from Madeira out of 500 who were ready to embark, but on misrepresentation of some one they did not want to risk themselves and families so. far away from their homes. Now if these people were properly nformed by some reliable person, and an offer of work at fair wages, either under contract or not, I am of the opin- ion mat tne planters would get as many good Portuguese laborers as they r.eed. I would very much like to have this considered by the interested parties, and I think now to be the proper time to. act. AN OBSERVER. THE OTHER SIDE. Editor Advertiser: There has been a good deal said and written of late in regard to the rights of pedestrians, in most of which I concur; but in this case, as in all others, there are two sides to the question. Drivers ot ve hicles should at least have some few nrivilezes and their riehts should be respected. When pedestrians persist in walking in the middle of the street in place of on the sidewalk, which is their legitimate location, and of cross ing the street at almost any spot but the crossings at the corners, it be comes almost an impossibility for even the most careful driver, at any time, and especially so now, in the crowded and cut-up condition of such central thoroughfares as King and Fort streets, to drive even at a walk with out knocking down, or at least inter fering with, those pedestrians who pre fer the'middle of the street to the side walk, for the purpose of taking their constitutionals or gossiping with their friends. In all other civilized commu nities people are required to cross the streets at the corners alone, ana in no other town save Honolulu are tram- cars allowed to stop in the middle of a block to tane on passengers. M. S. ' Honolulu, Aug. 29, 1S99. A DANGEROUS COUN I EKFEIT. Look Out for One Hundred Dol lar Treasury Notes. A gentleman who recently returned from the Coast states that when he left Honolulu August 3 he " took United States paper money instead of gld, as more convenient to carry. Among the notes was one of $100, purporting to have been issued by the United States Treasurer at Washington. When he offered this note in payment of passage on the China, the officers of the company declined to receive it.. Two other large firms also refused to take it, stating that counterfeits pf this particular note were in circulation. It was then taken to the United States Treasury in San Francisco with the statement as to where it was ob tained. That officer said that, although the counterfeits were very close imi tations of the genuine notes in circu lation, he would receive this note. Public notice had already been given in Washington of this new and dan- gerous counterfeit, recalling all out- standing notes of this denomination ($100). He cashed the note, with the remark that in this case he would per sonally assume all risk. It will be well for persons handling United States Treasury issues of this partic ular denomination ($100) to be on their guard, should any such be Offered here. The Kauai Term. The September Term of the Circuit Court for the Island of Kaioi opens at Nawiliwili on Wednesday next at 10 a. m., Judge Hardy presiding. The opening of the Kauai term and the necessity of many of the Honolulu lawyers being present was one of the causes of the adjournment of the Hono lulu term on Saturday. i . : - - t i s 4 parts soda 1 partC.D.C. and you have high-ball Crown Distilleries Co.
