R Williams, deceased, James A. Thomp son as master has filed his report on the accounts of W. R. Castle, executor and trustee. He finds that the ac counts for the periods rendered are correct, but that no account has been filed for the period beginning June 30 1897, and ending July 1, 189S, end also that the balance of $247.71 for the year 1897 has not been carried forward to the last 'account. The Court has or dered that the accounts for the period mentioned be filed before passing on the report of the master. An amenuea petition in the action of ejectment entitled Gulstan F. Rob ert, as trustee of John K. Sumner, vs Solomon Kauai, Kukuli Kauai and Ho Hee has been filed. The property in volved is situated at Waikiki. A powerful mountain engine was com ing down the steep grade below Car denas when it was thrown from the track and fell over a precipice into a mountain gorge, 1000 feet below. The engineer, who was an American, the Mexican fireman and two Mexican wood passers, were carried down with the engine and all were instantly killed. AT13ARA BRIDGE OPENED. LONDON, August 26. A special dis patch from Cairo says: The Sirdar, Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, suc cessfully opened the Atbara bridge to day, which was constructed by a Phi ladelphia firm after competition with British firms for the contract. The Evening News says: "It now remains to be seen whether this bridge built in America on lines condemned by English engineers, will be able to stand the Atbara's rushing floods." Twelve steel arches, each weighing thirty-three tons, which were to have supported the superstructure of the Coliseum build ing, in course of erection on Wabash avenue, between Fifteenth and Six teenth streets, fell to the ground late this afternoon. The Imperial Chancellor, Prince Hohenlohe, expressed the very great regret of the Government that the canal bill had not met with the approval of the Diet, but, he said, the Government adhered steadfastly to the project, and was confident that the conviction of its necessity would grow more among the people. The Chancellor concluded by saying the Government hoped the next session would bring about an understanding with the Diet. QUIET AT SAMOA. APIA, Samoa, August 23, via Auck land, August 28. The United States cruiser Abarenda has ar rived with the material for the coaling station and naval jetty at Pago-pago. BEET CROPS SHORT. SAN LUIS OBISPO, August 2S. The beet sugar factory at Beeteravia will only run six months this season. In the Santa Maria valley there is only half a crop and two-thirds of a crop in the Arroyo Grande valley. In many places in the Santa Maria valley the beet crop will not be harvested, as it will not pay for the work. BRAZIL WILL NOT PARTICIPATE. RIO JANEIRO, August 27. Dr. Campos Sall'es, President of Brazil, in the course of an interview this morn ing, declared that Brazil would take no part in the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. He also said that General Roca, President of the Argentine Re public would pay a visit to the United States on the same occasion. BUBONIC PLAGUE IN PORTUGAL. MADRID, August 27. It is reported here that a case of bubonic plague has developed in the Oporto Prison. CALIFORNIA OFFICIALS. SACRAMENTO, August 28 Govern or Gage this morning appointed F. V. Meyers of Stockton to be Labor Com misioner and George A. Knight to be attorney for the San Francisco Board of Health. John H. Grindley and George Reed of Oakland and William S.
