J. II. Witherford of New Zea land showing that great efforts are be ing made in that country to secure Government aid in the matter of grant ing subsidies to steamship companies to carry fast mail across the Pacific It is very likely that the movement will be taken up in the United State upon the reassembling of Congress many people on this coast being deeply interested. In New Zealand the busi iu-ss community is auve to tne im portance of improving the interovean mail service, but the high officials are either slow or favor the Suez route, as shown by the following letter from Mr. Witherford to Secretary Scott: As active efforts have been made to improve mail service which rivals the San Francisco line, I have during the past month been working hard to goi t lie service to your port established JAS.
