The agents of the steamship Mio wera, who refused on Wednesday to carry Hugan's minstrels, deny that they drew a "color line." They have addressed the following communica tion to the Advertiser: Editor Advertiser: The article in the Advertiser concerning the failure of llogan's minstrels to get passage on the Miowera is headcf by the state ment that a color line was drawn by the agents of that vessel. Permit us to say that this statement is devoid of a particle of truth. Not only did we place no impediment in the way of the minstrels getting off, but, as was our duty, we used our best efforts to se cure passage for them, and gieatly re Kret we were unsuccessful. Apart from the fact that the captain of the Miowera was prevented by the Victo ria, B. C, quarantine regulations from accepting any ether than firat-clasH passengers, there was not accommoda tion ou the steamer for the troupe, the few first-class rooms which were unoc cupied by through passengers from Australia having been engaged here long prior to the arrival of the steam er. TilEO. II. DA VIES & CO.. LTD., Agents Miowera. The minstrels, their manager, and the Orpheum folks tell a different story. Kinney, Ballou & McClanahan were yesterday preparing the suit to be brought against the agents of the Canadian-Australian steamship com pany. It was stated by one of the law firm that it would take at least two days' hard work to prepare the pleadings, and that then they would throw "a legal bombshell" into the steamer people's camp. "We think we have a first-rate suit and intend to push it through to the end." said the attorney, with a broad smile. Twenty-nine negro actors and act resses are left in Honolulu out of work by the refusal of the Miowera com pany to take them. Their necessitated 5tay will cost dearly and there la no certainty of when they can get away. The troup will not attempt to leave for San Francisco by the Australia. Their desire Is to reach Vancouver by WATERSUPPLY A Startling Plan Is Suggested. Writer Outlines a Scheme for Using The Underground Streams With out Artesian Wells. A novel idea for utilizing the water beneath the city is suggested In a com munication. The writer aays that as it has been ascertained that a great sheet of water sweeps under Honolulu to the sea, the city should build a shaft, tun nel and wall, and pen in this mighty supply, lows: The communication is as fol- 1 Editor Advertiser: Permit, me to make a suggestion about the water supply for Honolulu. It will probably commend itself to practical people. It ha been ascertained that artesian wells sunk in any part of the several valleys, from Kalihl to Diamond Head, will give surface vent to the water from the mountains that is flowing out to sea under the surface. We know that a broad fcheet of water from the mountains lies beneath the city, and that its constant How, the result of rain on the mountains, keeps back the sea water and preserves Its freedom from brine. We know, too, that this abundant supply of pure wa ter is running to waste into the sea at every Inch of space under the city except the few inches equalling the diameters of the artesian wells in the valleys. Now, what I suggest Is that we think a little. Tho vent at the China man's rice field or taro patch cannot be compared to that underground vent where the mountain water meets the rca water. If we deal Fueces.'fully with this we need not worry about that. And if ever Honolulu gets an unfailing and adequate "water supply, it will be by the construction of under ground reservoirs in the upper sections of the valleys, where the water is nat urally collected. But iMinie man will as-k how an underground reservoir could be con structed? I answer, by fluking a shaft, cutting a tunnel, and building a wall. In Butte, Cfty, Montana, the Anaconda Mining company has sunk a shaft over two thousand feet deep, has tunneled from It at different levels, and has for years carried on operations in these tunnels, where the flow of water re quires the use of the most powerful en gines and the largest pumps in the world to protect the laborers. Water Is better than gold, and what has been done In Montana can be done in Hono lulu. Of course, the work suggested would be expensive and difficult. But it would be a permanent blessing to the city, and as future residents , of the city would enjoy the benefits of It, a bonded debt, that would put upon them their share of the burden, would not be Im moral or unwise. Besides, this mode of securing a wat er supply would Bave the expanse of the proposed filtration plant, would re store to the community the use of the lands up the Nuuanu valley, and would save much of the expense of pumping which, with the present method, will be an everlasting expense. I could, If necessary, go Into partic ulars as to the work suggested and could easily show that In all respects It is feasible. For the present I am con tent with offering tile sureestlon. WAI LAWA. the most direct roulc, as railroad fares to the Sound country from San Fran cisco would cost almost as much as ! steamer passage from Honolulu to ; Vancouver direct The Omheum the ater feels a moral responsibility for the stranded company, and during the tay of the latter here will look out for them as far as possible. Both the management of the theater and of the troup say that by instituting suits at once they will probably either be able to, get Judgment against the steamer aRenta or effect a compromise, which would result in the colore! peo ple being taken to Vancouver oa the next steamer. Questioned as to what they really considered the reason for their being refused passage Wednesday, one of the manaRrrs stated that the Inference drawn by all the Interested parties was that the "color line" was taken Into consideration. They believe the cap tain of the vessel had orders when he left Sydney to peremptorily refuse to carry the troup to their destination, and that the a;,ents gave whatever ex cuse they could for rejecting the min strels at the eleventh hour. "I hum up the situation In thla wise," continued the manager. "The steamer would take about three weeks to sail from Sydney to Vancouver. That would be plenty of time before reaching the Utter port to cause the Vancouver officials no uneasiness as to the plague from the Sydney end, and no quarantine would therefore be listl. tuted. But to take on a bunch of thir ty colored people from Honolulu would give the authorities at Vancouver an opportunity to hold the vessel If they wanted to on account of the color of the minstrels. Just a If they were Chi nese or Japanese. But what did they do? After we were refused, seven or einht people were allowed to hook, and were taken oa the steamer. We were told there waa no room, but when the whlie people applied thero were plenty of berths. That Is our Inference." Twenty-nine separate suits will te brought and each suit costs $27 for court fees . Thla corned pretty high to the management of the company, but they have put up the money, and are willing lo light for what they consider their rights.
