Stiff and new and handsome, the
schooner Baiftbrldge arrived In port yes
terday afternoon from Port Townsend
and made fast alongside the steamer
Maul, which was lying at the Oceanic
dock. She is a splendid looking craft
and the pride of her master, Capt. Bau-
man, who is her first commander and who
has brought the staunch little vessel down
to Honolulu on ner maiden trip.
Captain IJauman is accompanied by his
wife, who is as proud of the new schoon
er as her husband is. The cabin is a
model of comfort, neatness and orler and
one knows immediately on entering the
cabin that a careful housewife is aboard.
Nothing could be eozirr than the quarters
aft and Captain and Mrs. I'.auman are
very happy in their brand new floating-home.
The ltainbriuge sailed from I'ort Town
send on June 22nd, and Vnjoyed a most
pleasant passage down, with the excep
tion of a strong southeasterly gale against
which she fought three days of the voy
age. On these days only 30, 67 and 70
knots were made. The schooner brings
7!2,OO0 feet of lumber to Allen & Robin
son. launched on April 2S at Port Blakely.
and completed on May 31, the JSainbridge
is a vessel of 4M tons net, 170 fVet and
4 inches in length, 37 feet and 6 Inches
beam and 12 feet and S inches depth of
hold. Mie ts capable of making 11 knots
in the hour and averages about 8 or 9
knots. She is a four-master, her sticks
measuring 94 feet. Coming down her big
gest run in one day was 22") knots.
Captain llauman has been to sea for
over twenty-three years, is a man of
wide experience and a thorough sailor in
every way. lie was formerly first of
ficer of the ship Kclipse and it was In that
vessel that Mrs. Ilauman accompanied
her husband around the Horn. The Cap
tain's wife is something of a sailor her
self and likes nowung better than resid
ing on the ocean. The IJainbrldge will
commence discharging tomorrow.
Miss Addle Seaburn. who was born on
Hainbridge Island, christened the new
schooner when Si.e was launched. Hence
tTt-r name.

Schooner Helene, Captain K. W. Chris
tiansen, arrived here yesterday morning
from San Francisco with a cargo of 2.-
) tons of general merchandise Tor v .
O. Irwin & Co., and seventeen horses for
S. SI. Damon, W. M. GifTard and Gus.
Sihuman. The Helene is a fast vessel
and a record breaker. She sailed from
San Francisco on Friday, June 29. The
trip down was a pleasant one with fair
weather all the way. Mrs. Christiansen
is with her husband. Four passengers
were brought here by the schooner Mrs.
Schluter, Mr. Gardner, Mrs. Hawkins
and Sir. Hawkins. The Helene landed
1ut horses at the Pacific Man uock.
Vlie United States Army transport Ixe-
lanaW docked at the new naval wharf
about 6 o'clock yesterday morning "from
San Francisco with 2T.2 horses on board,
for service In China. The vessel left San
Francisco on Sunday, July 1, at 2:30 p. m.
She brings" to Honolulu one day's later
news of the world.
Lieut. C. D. Rhodes of the Sixth Caval- j
ry Is the quartermaster in charge. Sec
ond Lieut. W. B. Scales. Dr. Rowan, c.
veterinary surgeons, one hospital attend
ant and thirty-cne men of the Sixth Cav
alry are also aboard. Twenty of the
thirty-one men are from Lieut. Rhodes
own troop and have seen service In the
San Juan fight. Capt. Storrs commands
the leelanaw. Six horses died on the
trip down as tfie result of a knocking
about received during very rough weath
er. The animals were landed yesterday
and will be given four or five days' rest
In the Government paddocks; meanwhile
the transport will take on coal.
The horses are a splendid lot of ani
mals, being thoroughly trained cavalry
mounts. Some of them were at the bat
tle of San Juan hill. They come from
different parts of the States and have
traveled thousands of m..es. Not a sin
gle horse died from sickness on the way
down; the deaths were due entirely to
accidents.
Proceeding from Honolulu to Kole, the
Leelanaw will there await orders and
then probably go on through the Inland
Sea. after taking a pilot, to Nagasaki.
The Grant was to have sailed from San
Francisco lor the Orient on July 2. The
Conemaugh left on the same day as the
Leelanaw. The Lennox has started from
Portland.
