He stated that he had taken this action as a preventive against dis turbances. Mr. McCandless, Superintendent of Public Works, read a communication from the Hawaiian Cemetery Associa tion whose burial grounds are located near Pearl City, in which they stated certain conditions under which they would agree to bury paupers who would have to be buried by the Gov ernment. They stipulated to r.erform this work at so much for each bodv, The proposition was discussed and re jected. Manager Pain of the Hawaiian Tram ways Company gave notice through Mr. McCandless that his company de sired to proceed with the construction of switch loops on King and Beretania streets in order to run more cars. The switches would be located half way be tween the present ones. Mr. McCand less read a draft of his reply which was to the effect tht the Tramways Company should furnish a map and specifications showing Just what they intended to do. It is thought this ac tion is a new move on the Tramways Company s part to gain control of King street where the Rapid Transit 'Com pany has already laid Its rails. A letter from the Department of State. Washington, enclosing one from the War Department, was read bv Governor Dole. The contents dealt with a piece of land near Moanalua which the Government desired to use as a cemetery site. The answer from the War Department was to the effect that the piece of land in question was the only section available here which could be Used for military purposes and mat otner lands would be so expensive that it preferred to retain possession oi tne property. Treasurer Lansing was authorized to transfer from the current to the loan fund, the sum of $24,000.
