SEATTLE BEER -AT THE CRITERION SALOON, The Oceanic Company's splendid new steamship Sierra sails from San Francisco today for Honolulu. She is expected to make a fast trip and may arrive here on the evening of Monday. the 17th, instant. THE KENNEBEC SAILS AT LAST. After experiencing all kinds of trou ble in the matter of procuring a crew for the last couple of weeks, the Am erican ship Kennebec, Captain W. T. Lewis, managed to get away yesterday morning for the Sound, in ballast, with a white crew. The crimps have waged a bitter war over the Kennebec, and now that she is gone they are more at liberty to put their whole minds into the profitable business of stealing men from one vessel in the harbor to ship them on another about to go out and in need of men. The crimps, by the way, will be doing a rushing business very shortly. ISLAND STEAMERS DEPART. At noon yesterday the Kinau sailed for HIlo and way ports. One of the argest crowds that ever saw the steamer off was on Wilder's wharf as she departed. The ClauSine left for Kahului and way ports at 5 o'clock in the afternoon; the MIkahala left for J xsawiiiwau at tne same time, and the Waialeale sailed for Hanarhaula at 4 o'clock. An unusual amount of freight went to the other islands on these steamers, consisting to a large extent of Christmas goods. THE GASOLINE SCHOONERS. The gasoline schooners of the Ha waiian Navigation Company left yes terday on their regular runs. The Eclipse, Captain Townsend, sailed for Lafoaina, Makena, Kihei and Kona ports, and the Surprise departed for Kauai ports with Captain Nystrom in command. The little Island schoonera Lady and Blanche and Ella sailed for Koolau ports and Hanalei and Kalihi wai, respectively. . . THREE SOLDIERS ON A MULE. When the "skinners" belonging to the transport Aztec were taking mules to the government paddocks after they had been taken from the transport, last night, one of the sagacious ani mals managed to get away from one of the bunches and wandered off by himself. Three soldiers from the transport Meade, who had been see ing the sights of the city, ran across the stray mule, and feeling rather tired after walking round all day and rate at last. Tuesday night's storm proved too much for it, ana about mid night the rotten old stick feu with a rcisuiiuiiig crash, which " was hearu nign above uie roaiii.s 'of ine gale1. Thus vanishes one of ttie most inter esting mementos ot the early days, when electric cables were not, and the only regular means of communication with the outer world was by means o the bi-monthly steamer from Panama. All San Francisco went wild with ex citement on those days, and the mem ory of them is still kept alive by the curious survival of the "Steamer Day" custom. As a matter of convenience it became the practice to collect and pay all accounts at these periods, and though modern methods of communica tion have entirely revolutionized busi ness matters, the plan has endured for tifty years. "When a steamer was due every eye was fixed on Telegraph Hill, where the tall semaphore pole was dis tinctly visible from all parts of the city. Everybody knew the code of sig nals employed, and as soon as the arms began to move, the name and character of the approaching vessel was known. In the early days there was another Semaphore Station at Fort Paint, and the signals from there were repeated to Telegraph Hill.. The method was kept up until about twenty years ago, when a telephone line was put in, remarkable for being, at the time of its installation, the longest one west of the Rockies. One by one the old landmarks of San Francisco are disappearing. San Fran cisco News-Letter. LATEST FREIGHTS AND CHAR TERS. Upon their arrival at the wharf they dropped from the mule's back, one by one, and then hitched the obliging brute to a post right near the gangway of the Aztec. "We will leave him here," they said, "for then he will be found the first thing in the morn ing." Then the tired soldiers hurried aboard the Meade and turned in. The mule waited patiently for daylight; he had had a taste of liberty and wanted more, and objected to being tied to a post. The Aztec, it will be remember ed, is at the Pacific Mail wharf, while the Meade is at the Navy wharf, so that the two boat3 are right next to each other. MUSIC ABOARD THE MEADE. Kappelmelster Berger and his band. together with two popular young na tive song-birds, who add eo delight ful a charm to the band concerts, were the source of great pleasure aboaid the transport Meade yesterday after noon. The ladies and officers, as well as many visitors on the great vessel gathered on the shady side of the steamer and listened for a couple of pleasant hours to the best efforts of the musicians. There was also a crowd of people on the wharf, attracted by the sound of the music, and ithe sing ers and instrumentalists performed to a large and assorted audience. The Meade sails today for Manila via Guam. She will get away some time during the afternoon. MISCELLANEOUS. SAN FRANCISCO. Dec. 3. The coasting steamer Bonita, which arrived 1 yesterday afternoon from Newport, south, reported that earlier in the day she sighted a large sailiner. vessel stand ing about two miles off Half Moon bay. It was 10 or 11 o'clock when the Eo- nita passed the vessel, but nothiner con cerning the stranger's position off Half Moon bay was learned by telephone at the Merchants' Exchange, and late in tne arternoon the belief was exDressed that the northeast wind that blowing outside had taken" the un known vessel further out to sea. The treacherous currents which run in to ward Montara reef have carried manv a vessel to Its doom and mariners fa miliar with the place srive it a wide berth. Four stowaways who exnecterl tn trn to Manila on the transport Meade were discovered in hiding on the vessel after she left port Saturday afternoon and were bundled Into the pilot boat Amer ica and brought back to the city. They were Pete Jackson, colored, aged about ham Peterson, a riveter at the Union Iron Works; Tom Jones and Harry Lyons. The latter turn am frnm Chicago and notwithstanding their ten- uer years are said to be hardened youngsters. They were once before in the Philippines, but were sent home by General MacArthur. Pilots Kortz and McCullough, who brought the stow aways back yesterday, had hard work keeping the little fellows out of mis chief on the pilot boat and were glad to bid them good-bye upon arriving in port. As the little fellows were penni less. Pilot McCullough gave them a dol lar with which to purchase food. SEMAPHORE POLE GONE.
