The Thomas wa Sighted early yesterday morning, and by 9 o'clock was docked at Naval whan No. 2. As soon as the gangplank was down the school teachers came down it with a rush and betook themselves to town. It was a camera aggregation. Every male teacher carried a camera, :rany even used tripods, and most all of them affected the shirtwaist style. The women carried notebooks and mado notes of what they saw. Within an huur after the transport docked not a single one of the entire 528 passengers remained on the ship. The transportation of such a large number of teachers marks a new era of civilization wending its way to the southern archipelago. The transport is given over almost entirely to the trans portation of teachers, who are to report to Superintendent Atkinson of the pub lic schools, at Manila. He will dispose them throughout the various islands of the group. None of the teachers aboard the transport know just where they are to be assigned, but as none have yet seen the Philippines they are enthusiastic over the situation and all eager to commence on the young Fili pinos. The transport is commanded by Cap tain M. B. Buford, a former Naval offi cer, while Captain Culling, Quartermas ter, U.S.A., is in charge of the trans port. Captain Culling has no easy task in looking after such a large number of first-class passengers. With 1,500 soldiers aboard there would not be the slightest trouble, as the Army disci pline compels them to keep to certain quarters, and furthermore they police their own quarters, make up their own bunks, and otherwise take off the Quar termaster's hands a number of little duties. Under the present circum stances the transport officials have to look after the policing of the state rooms. The transport left San Francisco on July 23, and will leave Honolulu for Manila direct tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. She will take on as passen gers from Honolulu Professor Town send and family and Mr. Hiltz and family, both of whom go to Manila to take important positions in the educa tional service. The passengers have made up va rious clubs during the trip to Honolu lu, consisting of Camera Exchange Clubs, by which those who have taken especially fine pictures of certain scenes about the vessel can exchange with others for their views. One of the signs posted up on board which attracts the attention of the Honolulan who visits the vessel is the following: "Men in shirt-sleeves will not be al lowed on the upper deck. By order of Captain W. M. Culling, Q. M., U. S. Ar my, Commanding." The pedagogues have been warned that the styles prevalent on Fifth ave nue are to be strictly adhered to on the present voyage. In other words, it is apparent that the shirtwaist man is not a recognized factor in the social life of the transport, despite the warmth of the weather. As the weath er in the vicinity of the Philippines is especially torrid at this time of the year. It is yet a question whether pa jamas or kimonos will be allowed as an element of every-day masculine attire. It is understood, however, that the men would be allowed to display their shirt waists and shirt-sleeves if It were not for so many schoolma'ams aboard. That makes all the difference in the world. The organization of the Masons and Eastern Stars was brought about dur ing the trip and the secret orders will h ld regular meetings until the end of the voyage. The only place where the meetings could be effectively secret is in the refrigerator, which is not pro vided with portholes, but the member of both orders are opposed to tneir meetings being considered a frost. The passengers represent most of the States of the Union with few excep tions. New York and California have the largest representation, dwindling down to two or three for some of the States. Many of them have friends here who were at the wharf to meet them. As a mail for the States leaves today the Islands will be well adver tised, as the majority prepared notes during the day to put Into their letters home. Berkeley sends a large repre sentation to Manila. There are Har vard and Yale men aboard and some of olher universities al represented. J. B. Brown Not Dismasted. The American ship J. B. Brown, commanded by Captain Knight, which the barkentine Gleaner spoke down in the South Seas and reported as hav ing been dismasted In a gale, and for whom shipping men have expressed hopes for her safe voyage to this port, arrived yesterday afternoon and an-t U, S Army Transport Itiomas. Brown -s not dismasted; she did not meet with any heavy gales, and although she sprang a leak before reaching Tahiti, -;he was repaired there and came to Honolulu without further incident. The fears that have been entertained for her safety were ill-spent. On June 6 the ship was leaking badly in the butts on the starboard side. The captain headed for Papeete, Tahiti, where a diver examined the vessel and stopped the leak. This took six days' time, and the ship then proceeded on her voyage to this port. She arrived here very foul, and will probably go on the Marine Railway after discharging her cargo. She was seventy-six days on the run between Newcfistle apd Hono lulu. When the Gleaner saw the J. B. Brown, the latter was traveling under j shortened sail on account of the leak, and this accounts for the report made j by the Gleaner that the vessel was dis-! masted. " 7 Bells" for Captain Buford. An interesting ceremony took place yesterday morning on the transport Thomas at "seven bells," by ship's time, and 1130 by the land lubber's watch. The occasion was the presenta tion of a handsome silver service to Capt. M. B. Buford, the popular com mander of the Thomas, which arrived yesterday morning from San Francis co, en route to Manila, by the officers and engineers of the vessel. For sev eral weeks the donors had planned to surprise Captain Buford with a token of their honest regard aad high esteem for their superior officer, and managed to keep the event quiet until yester day forenoon. It was deemed better to present the service at Honolulu, en route on the voyage, than at San Francisco while tied up at the dock. It was decided that yesterday forenoon at 11:30 was just the time to present the token, as the handsome tray is in scribed with a ship's bell surmounted by the figure "7," as it is at "seven bells, when the sun goes over the fore yard." Captain Buford was attired in his pajamas when his stateroom door was opened. He was astonished to find the entire company of officers and engi neers standing in front of it. Mutiny, demands and all sorts of suggestions came to the captain's mind, but these were dispersed when First Officer James Murray stepped forward and presented to the captain a service con sisting of the following pieces, on a wqfbden tray with a silver railing around it. Near the center is a gold ship's bell in relief, surmounted by "7;" one dozen cut-glass goblets; one dozen cut-glass cocktail glasses; a cut-glass ice holder with tongs, and a mixing spoon mounted in silver; two sflver mounted decanters, sugar bowl, lemon juice holder, syrup jug, bitters holder, cut-glass dish for sandwiches; glass stoppers mounted in silver; everything appropriately engraved with the cap tain's monogram. The service came from Shreve's. Mr. Murray made a neat speech com plimenting the captain for the manner in which he had made all the men on the ship his fast friends. The captain was greatly surprised, and asked for time to put on a coat over his pajama costume before replying. He thanked the officers for their kindness, and was almost at a loss to respond in words. Those who were responsible for the presentation were Chief Officer J. A. Murray, Second Officer Randall, Third Officer Larsen, Fourth Officer Chrispin, Fifth Officer Bane, Sixth Officer Stan ford, Chief Engineer A. G. Rose, First Assistant Dempster. Second Assistants Mair and Kreher, Third Officers Den ton, Stephens and Reagan, and Dr. G. F. Juenemann. Captain Buford is a graduate of An napolis Naval Academy, and formerly was a commander in the navy. He re signed and went into private business. When the Spanish war broxe out he was In command of a gunboat, later succeeding to the command of the transport Thomas. He is considered one of the most popular men In the transport service. Carleton to Bring: Coal. SHIPPING NOTES. Bark Abbey Palmer sailed from New castle for Honolulu, July 20. The bark Ceylon will leave today for Laysan Island for a cargo of guano. The ship Republic will probably sail this afternoon for the Sound, in bal last. The steamer Carlisle City has been released from quarantine at Angel Isl land. Bark Amy Turner arrived at San Francisco, from Hilo, July 21, eighteen days out. The ship Hawaiian Isles will finish discharging her coal cargo today, and will sail Saturday morning for the Sound, in ballast. On July 17, the British ship Hillston, from Honolulu for Portland, was sight ed in latitude 42 degrees 31 minutes north, longitude 135 degrees 40 minutes west. By Wallace's last circular from New castle, the following freight rates were quoted: San Francisco, 13s 9d; Hono lulu, 15s; Valparaiso, 21s; Acapulco, 21s; Panama, 23s. The steamer Peru, Captain Pillsbury, is scheduled to sail from San Francis co Thursday, July 25, for Japan and China by way of Honolulu. She should arrive here today. All leis and other floral offerings for Jerry Reynolds, the mate of the bark Rithet, should be on the wharf this morning not later than 9:30, as the Ves sel sails at 10 o'clock. The J. B. Thomas wilj finish dis charging the 'coal cargo this week. No fire oc clinkers have been discovered, although when she put Into Honolulu it was believed that her coal was afire. The St. Nicholas will berth Monday in the upper end of the harbor. She is now in the lower end discharging a portion of her cargo, and when light ened can easily moor in the upper har bor. The Moana, which anchored outside the harbor last night, came into port this morning and moored at the Pacific Mail dock. She took on a number of passengers from Honolulu, and sailed for Vancouver at 5 p. m. The U S. A. T. Thomas is officered for the army, as follows: W. M. Coul ling, captain and quartermaster, U. S. A. (.commanding); L. F. Garrard, cap tain and quartermaster, U. S. A.; Geo. F. Junemann, assistant surgeon, U. S. A.; M. R. Buford, master deck depart ment; 56 deck department employes, 70 engineering department employes, 121 steward's department employes, 2 stowaways, 5 hospital corps (enlisted men). The large number of stewards is absolutely necessary to properly care for so many persons. .. VESSELS IN PORT. The American ship S. D. Carleton, Captain Amesbury, arrived at Tacoma July 21, in tow, having arrived there from Honolulu, via San Francisco, twenty days out from that city to Ta coma. Captain Amesbury reports hav ing spoken the ship C. F. Sargent, Captain Melville, en route from Hono lulu to Tacoma direct, about 200 miles southeast of Cape Flattery on July 16. Nothiig has been heard from the Sar gent, although the Carleton expected to find her In port. The S. D. Carleton left Tacoma on I March 27 with a cargo of Roslyn coal for the Islands, and was sixteen days out to Honolulu. After discharging her coal she reloaded with sugar ror San Francisco, making the voyage in nine teen days. She left San Francisco on June 29 with the barometer very low and encountered a heavy west-northwest blow outside. She sighted the cape with calms and light winds, and waited three days for a tug to bring her in. The Carleton was anchored in the Tacoma stream to put oyt ballast. She will reload with coal for the Isl ands. A Wonderful Wooden Shoe. One of the few relics saved from the bark Empire, which burned to the water's edge and sank off Mahukona, is a shoe wonderfully made by one of the sailors during the voyage from Sydney to Hawaii. The shoe is now the property of Frank Woodbridge of this city, to whom It was pres- nted. The shoe consists of a wooden sole made with a Jackknife, and would fit the foot of a man who ordinarily wears about a number 11 or 12. The sole is all in one piece, with heel. The back portion of the shoe proper is constructed of heavy leather as un bending as Iron. The maker of the shoe intended it to be a summer shoe, or canvass affair. The upper is com posed entirely of the heaviest sail cloth with eyeholes for lacing. It is a curios ity, and has additional valne because of its associations with the Ill-fated bark.
