THE PACIFIC COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER, HONOLULU, SEPTEMBER 1 BOYS He Makes Friendly Talk at the Hall. GOOD TIMES AT - LITTLE EXPENSE Austin Neglects to Produce Books or Vouchers Sajs He Needs No Vindication. During the meeting of the -Murphy Club No. 1 Saturday night, ilr. Francis Mur phy was present and madv an interesting talk. He said, in part: '"I want to speak to you tonight about the great advantages of recreation with out beer or other intoxicating liquors. such as it can be had here in this hall and in other places like it. Here you can come tonight and spend your Saturday evening, or any other evening for that matter, with your wife and the little ones, iou can see your mends and taiK with them, and hear music and hours and speeches, and if you want a drink. why, there's the bar; you can ' have a nice drink of cool Ringer ale, or root beer, and your wife and children can en joy some with you. It won't cost you anything, in comparison to what beer and whiskey costs you, when you go out with your friends. You save a lot of money, you can dress your wife up fine, so you will feel proud of taking her out to some little entertainment like this, and then, too, think of the children. God bless them; why, many of us are pretty near strangers to our children. Take them out once in a while, give them a drink of sodawater, and you will see how your children will hang around you and say, "Oh, papa, what a nice time we have 'had. Oh, papa, when are we going there again?" And your children will talk about it for days. And what has it cost you? It has not cost you any thing. On the contrary, you have saved money, and you will have money to make your "home a happy one. You will be able to let your wife carry a purse, instead of having her beg you for every cent she wants, and j'ou will have money to give your children. I know plenty of workingmen who are constantly kicking against their wages. They say that they' don't get enough money, that they can't afford to educate their children. And yet these very same men could save from fifty cents to $1.50 a day if they would save their money for their families, in stead of spending it on liquor. And you know that your children need an educa tion. Many of you, who have not had good advantages when you were young, know how important an education is, how much more money you could earn, and how much happier you could be if you had a good education. This place is no market for the laboring man. Why, the other day a man said to me: "This is no place for a workingman to get work; you have to be a skilled mechanic to get on." Now, do you want your children to Be hewers of wood and drawers of water? You want to give them a good show, when they start in life. And all you need to do is to give up your whisky and your beer. Remember, that many of us can't drink one glass of alcoholic beverage without wanting another, and then at last we get drunk, and there you are. Better quit it altogether and patronize this club, which will give pleas ure to you, and also to your wife and your children. You will save enough by going here and by giving up the saloons to spare a couple of cents now and then, that you can give the club to help boost it along, so it can pay irs rents and lights and all the other things. Help it along; it is helping- you; do what you can for it and your fellowmen, and make it a statue of light,, industry and honor. Goodnight." During the evening Mr. Murphy re marked that Mrs. Murphy would not come over -as he had expected, as she was engaged in supervising the' building of a house in Fair Oaks, near Sacra mento. "But," added the old temperance apostle, with a twinkle in his eye, "I shouldn't be a bit surprised is she came over in the Ventura just the same." Although Franklin Austin had called the meeting through the Bulletin ex pressly to hear his "vindication," he merely talked in a vehement way, say ing that he needed no vindication at all, and was responsible for the steward ship of ftfnds merely to those who had supplied them. MRS. NATION IS LECTURING Boys, Tobacco, Corset, Decollete Dresses, Picfure Hats . and f(um. ATLANTIC CITY, Aug. 31. Mrs. Carrie Nation arrived here this morn ing, lectured this afternoon and even ing on the auditorium pier and left town on a ate train without smash ing anything. Placards announcing the lectures had been posted conspicu ously about town, but principally m front of saloons. The saloon Keepers quickly had large muslin signs made, advertising special brands of whisky by'the bottle, with a bottle of black berry thrown in with every sale, and these were placed directly under Mrs. Nation's placards. Mrs. Nation came from New York, and Immediately on her arrival sought a. beach front hotel. Af every place where accommodation was asked the polite but direct answer was given that "all rooms are occupied or engaged. Failing to get Into a large hotel Mrs. Nation, It is said, took her meals at a restaurant noted for it3 champagne suppers called "The Extra Dry.- Mrs. Nation arrived on the pier at 3:30. Her appearance was heralded by much applause. She spoke for one hour. She was dressed in a plain black skirt with a white shirtwaist. Mrs. Nation opened her remarks by saying that she expected to talk to at least a thousand children, but instead the "congregation" were nearly all THE grown people, only a few children 'be ing scattered about. She said no doubt every one was surprised to see her," as she was released from the Topeka, Kan., jail only a week ago. She -seemed proud to be able to say that she had been . behind tire bars. While in prison she edited a journal to be pub lished shortly to be called the Smash er's Mail, and asked for subscriptions at 50 cents a year. The beginning of her lecture was ad vice to boys. Her thoughts' then twist ed to tobacco, which she denounced In its various forms. She suggested to the wives and children . that they should cleanse the mouths of their hus bands and fathers who use tobacco with, weak lye, as fumigating was nec essary. She talked of tight lacing and ad vised all young men not to marry a girl who is determined to make her figure different than nature -Intended it to be. She denounced fancy dressing, low-cut necks and the wearing of Jew- f Iry. "Don't wear a lace-covered dress with ruffles and frills and big ostrich feathers in your hat, for such is only ihe dress of prostitutes," she said. S!ie asked all married men who Quote the faiole at least once a day to their chil dren to raise their hands. She counted tv.v-nty-one. Her hatchet was brought forward frequently to punctuate her remarks and it brought loud cheers. Mrs. Nation said she is sorry that she did not commence saloon smashing thirty years ago, as the country would be more Christianized by this time. She said she had- closed from sixteen to eighteen dives in Barner county, Kan., her home county, and that none now exists there. In . Topeka five months ago forty saloons did a rush ing business, not one she said, is open today. The people present expected to hear .something about the curse of drink in Atlantic City and the wide-open policy on the Sabbath, but not a word was uttered on that-subject. Some of her points were received with cheers. After each lecture the "corigregation" arose and under her leadership sang the dox ology. Throughout her addresses she constantly quoted the Bible. About 2,000 were present both afternoon ana evening. The lectures were given in aid of the Philadelphia North Ameri can Poor Children Relief Fund. After the lectures Mrs. Nation sold about 200 souvenir hatchets at 25 cents apiece. She will lecture in Rochester, N. Y., Monday afternoon. THE HAIR BRUSH. Breeds Dandruff, Which Causes Falling Hair and Finally Baldness. Prof. Unna, Hamburg, Germany, European authority on skin diseases, says that dandruff is as contagious as any other malevolent disease and that one common source of the spread of dandruff is the use of the same hair brush by different persons. The way to avoid catching dandruff or any other disease from another's brush Is to In sist on the use of Newbro's Herpicide. It not only kills the dandruff germ, but it is also an antiseptic that will prevent the catchlng-'of any disease whatever through contagion of another's brush. Are You Surprised ?
