TO AID STRIKE Teamsters May be Starving All Chicago. STOCK YARDS NOW TIED UP . . . .. union mtn Declare They Will Prevent Coal and Ice From Reaching Butchers. CHICAGO. May 27-Ch:co's beef sup ply from the stockyards has been almost entirely cut off. and unless the conces sions demanded by the strlklnjr teamsters are granted within the next day or two the city will be face to face with a meat famine. Not only have the big packers failed In every attempt to smuggle meat out of the yards, but the wholesale and retail butchers, who usually drive their own wagons and take out loads of provi sions, have been forbidden to do so in the future. A number of them were today allowed to carr away uluff that tht-y had bought from the packers, but they w re warned not to return for any more until the trouble Is settled. CHICAGO. May 28. If Ihe four irreat packing concerns at the Union Stock Yards do not yield to the demands of the striking teamsters within a short time It may result In a general stop page of 40.000 employes at the yards. Already several hundred persons have qulti The situation Is becoming as in volved that It apparently will be im possible for the union men to remain at work much longer without violating Ihe rules of the Chicago Federation of Labor, under which they hold char ters. A strike among the beef butchers or hog butchers or any other set of men. upon whom hundreds of others are de pendent, would cause a complete tie up In every branch. This Is said to be nut unlikely, because In many Instances union men have been asked to do the work of the btrikers, and have been discharged upon refusing. Further more, union men are forbidden to han dle goods that have been prepared by non-union labor, and It is said to be neurly Impracticable for the men to continue without doing this. Conferences between several of the firms and representatives of the union A'ere held this aftrmxtn in an ffort to adjust the trouble, put the packers re fused to concede any of the demands of the strikers, and the probability of an early settlement seems as remote as on i flrst dny of the tie-up. Tonight 2"2j lxxmakers employed by the Nutional Box Company's plant at Thirty-eighth street and Center avenue Mru k because they had been asked to furnish boxes to the packers against whom the teamsters are struggling. Tin- American Kxpress ompany re- 'i,- d td iy to handle meat because of the f-ar that Its drivers, who are inem bers of the teamsters' union, would strike If asked to haul meat. Striking teamstera attempted today to curlad the meat supply of down town hotels and restaurants by sur rounding drivers for Sw ift & Co. and threatening them. Policemen, sent In r - .. riot call, dlspers-il the crowd, however, and soon were in full possession. Further xtens to extend the strike Wl PS taken today when orders were issued from the teamsters' headquar ters that no oal should be delivered to ihe concerns to refrigerate meat for "ui.fair" butcher shops or packing houses, ""his development promises the most cemplelc tie-up of teaming deliv eries ever experienced In Chicago. Butchers who use meat delivered by non-union drivers will lose their ice and concerns that make their own ice will Pe their coal. CHICAGO, May 31 The teamsters' strike today spread to the department stoies. Eighty-nine men working for the fair struck ami it is stated that 40t more men employed by other big stores will be out by tontgnt. The ef- - raid, would be to practical ly shut off th delivery of gixds to cus tomers and th- bringing of new stock. The department store teamsters' union was recently formed and s aUlllated with the national organixution on the same footing as the one at the yards. Th men make the same demand as the packers' teamsters for better hours, higher .vages and recognition of the union Police were called to suard the Fair. Ja ..l K. SM.er. u.unagei of the es tablishment, attempted to address the t. a -ustcr! this morning. Their business .i--r.t. bowevetr, told Mr. Kessner that he would have to talk to the men's agent and that he could not talk to the men. "I do not recognize you." said Mr. Kessner. At tbia the business agent blew the whistle nd the teamsters to a man lull wrk leaving large guards of pW kets. how ever, to look sfter their ln- tei est.
