Several reputable white men, not of their politics, have been sounded about running in their name and if any of them are chosen, the Home Rule county ticket may not be so bad after all. Since the Martinique disaster, the great Porto Rlcan hurricane and the recent cy clonic visitation to Jamaica, the West Indian trip has not been popular. Big steamers, loaded down with excursion ists, are not likely to be in evidence there soon again. If it is possible to convince people that they can fini In Hawaii a greater beauty of scenery than in the West Indies, a more emol lient climate with no danger from vol canoes or storms, then the rvult should be seen in a large Increase or tourist travel this way. facts to make clear are that the volcano is traditionally tame; that it acts as an escape valve ror gases which otherwise might cause earth quakes and that it is situated on an island about 150 miles from the one . . - a on which Honolulu is locaiea. Aisu that tornadoes are unknown among the "calms of Cancer" and that the elements, In their action here, are not threatening to man. In fact Hawaii has almost every advantage over the West Indian Isl ands except proximity to the East ern seaboard more varied scenery, a more equable climate, better public sanitation than is usually found there, a more cosmopolitan people, finer ho tels, a better table and more modern comforts of all kinds. I THE BISHOP Bishop Libert was the guest of honor at a banquet given at the Hawaiian Hotel last night by the Catholic Benev olent Union of which he is the director. hotel at half past eight o'clock last evening. The tables were lighted by red shaded candles, and In the center of the room was the chief decorative feature a model of an old time cathe dral. It was constructed by the hotel chef from sugar. An elegant repast was served to the guests and It was nearly midnight be fore the festivities ended. Besides the members of the Catholic Union, and the priests at the mission, many prominent residents of the city were guests. THE MOSQUITO FUND. (Tbe OfflcUl sod Commercial Record. The next few days will prove wheth er the people of Honolulu mean what they say, or whether they are "talking through their hate" when they say they want to get rid of mosquitoes. The Board .of Health has passed res olutions, the people have had a mass meeting which passed more resolutions, executive committee, finance commit tees have been appointed, and now it is up to the people to say whether it shall all end In talk, or whether a bona fide effort is to be made to secure re suits. Resolutions and committees are good as far as they go, but they will not kill mosquitoes. It takes muscle and kerosene oil to do that, and these cost money. This will cost several hun dred dollars a month, but the elimina tlon of the mosquito from Honolulu so ciety is worth several thousand dollars a month. There are people who think it can not be done. They may be right, but then again they may be wrong. The benefit will be so great that It is worth while to experiment. If unsuccessful we will have lost a few dollars in z. good cause. If successful, the result will be cheap no matter what the cost. .The mosquito finance committee asks for subscriptions, payable monthly, as the expense will be a continuing one. Everyone interested in Honolulu's health, business and comfort is Inter ested In this problem. Honolulu has a reputation for public splritedness. This is a good time to demonstrate that such reputation Is living fact and not a dead tradition. The finance committee consists of P. M. Pond of the Waterhouse Trust Com pany, and Ralph Helm of the Pearson, Potter Company. Subscriptions can be mailed to, or left with either gentleman. r Oommunltv Sympathetic. There is much sympathy heard ex pressed in the community for Gee. W. C. Jones, the aged father of Eddie Jones, and. for the innocent members of his family. The patriarch, who for many years was esteemed amon? the most useful and Intelligent resi dents of Hawaii, has for some time been in a feeble condition from the Infirmities of age. His Fens and daughters, excepting th fugitive murderer, hold respectable positions in business and society. The family is overwhelmed with grief over the situation In which they are plunged. A laughable account Is given by the Kingman Leader-Courier of the trou bles of a young married couple from Pratt County, Kan. They had gone to Kingman to be married, and in tended to go East on a wedding trip. After they had entered the train, the husband alighted for something, and the train went off and left him. His bride had neither money nor tickets. She was frantic, but some of the pas sengers sought to console her. At the first station' she gov off. It was night. but she managed to find a farmer who agreed to carry her back to Kingman in his wagon. They arrived so late in the night that all the hotels and other places were closed, but the farm er managed to find refuge for the bride at the home of a family. In the meantime, the husband had learned that there would be no train out of Kingman the next day, which was Sunday. He wired to Hutchinson that he was coming by buggy, but his wife was not at Hutchinson to receive the telegram. He made a long night drive to Hutchinson, but found no one there who knew anything about the ' (Continued from page L) In the Fourth Jack Lucas and F.. W. Macfarlane are being mentioned for the same office. The Republican Executive Committee is bending all Its energies now to get ting out the vote for Friday's prima rles. Meetings are to be held at the same hour In all the precincts in the Territory and the committee is anxious that on the Saturday following as big a vote as possible be polled. For this reason, work is being done to get the citizens interested sufficiently to attend the primaries, and take a hand in saying who the nominees shall be, The Second Precinct Club of the Fourth District will meet again tomor row evening and discuss county can didates. At the same time nomina tions for delegates will be made, and it . is the expectaUon to ' instruct the delegates for whom they shall vote In the county convention. The Second Precinct will very likely be the first to put a county ticket in the field, for the announcement has quietly gone forth that prospective candidates, are expected to place their names in the hands of the Executive Committee of the club before tomorrow evening. Al though the nominations for delegates will be made at this meeting, the formal endorsement will take place at Friday evening's meeting and be voted upon Saturday. In most of the precincts, particularly In' the Fifth District, there is opposi tion to the plan of instructing before hand the delegates that are chosen at the primary elections. The chief ob jection Is that the possible candidates are not known as yet, and that it would be folly to endorse a man, weeks before the' convention, who might not be heard of again. The other objec tion is that it prevents all chances of trading or compromises in the conven tion, if the delegates are bound be forehand by a hard and fast rule. The Republican Executive Com mittee has made arrangements' to re ceive the list of nominations Friday evening, and also the results of the Saturday elections. It will require considerable hard work to have the primary tickets ready for the voters on the day following the nominations and the committee will assist in this work as far as Is possible. ' Vlda. Clark, Holt, Lane, Wallace and other Fifth District reformers had a meeting at Stewart's office yesterday at which It is reported that they agreed to support Brown for Sheriff providing Brown's men would support Stewart for City and County Attorney. 1 The Mosqu to Campaign. - Dr. Cooper, president of the Board of Health and chairman of the Citi zens' Mosquito Committee, stated yes terday morning that he would no appoint a captain of the mosouito destruction campaign untn a fund Is raised. The committee's finance com mittee may have something encour aging to report in that regard at the meeting tomorrow afternoon. f A recent improvement in . railroad locomotive headlights is to send a beam of light vertically from the locomotive, as well as straight ahead. The column of light, rising vertically from the loco motive, can be seen from a great dis tance, even though a hill should In tervene to hide the ordinary headlight and dull the sound of the whistle. The searchlight effect used aboard ships is thus to some extent utilized. An ap proaching locomotive with this device always signals Its coming with a "pil lar of fire" by night, producing an im pressive as well as useful result. J u O-t out of the .
