'"The new Alakea slip will be en
tirely dredged out and completed by
December," said W. H. Hoogs yester
day.. "The dredger- Governor is doing
fine work on the slip and already the
floor of the completed portion has been
polished down pretty evenly. Yester
day the dredger went down to 37 feet.
The contract calls for a der)h of 34 fit. at
mean low tide. The dredger still has to
cut out the strip of land Waikiki of
where it is at present working, as far
as the Ewa side of the new railroad
wharf which has just been construct
ed. There i? a strip eighty feet wide
extending Ewawards from the Naval
dock that doesn't have to be dredged.
When completed' the slip will be a
credit to the Territory."
EXPENSIVE EXPRESS.
There was a night or two last week
when the dredger Governor did not do
any work. The machinery was allow
ed to cool off for a while, as
enma ncrwsarv nippps of map.hlnwv
ordered by cable from Marion, Ind.,
failed to reach here in time, owing to
delay through the Alameda accident.
One of the representatives of the local
dredging people was on the Coast when
the stuff came there by express, and he
nearly fell dead when he found the ex
press company's bill to San Francisco
only was $200 a ton and there were two
tons. However, the dredger needed the
machinery and there were not two
ways about it the bill was promptly
paid, and the sections arrived on the
Navadan. The dredger is working day
and night again.
MYERS ON INSURANCE.
"This 'general average proposition
on the Alameda's goods will teach local
consignees to take out marine insurance
at this end. Instead of giving it to San
Francisco agents," said Zeno K. Myers
yeterday. "I have told people down
here time and again that they ought
to make their insurance with the local
agents, and now I guess some of them
wish they had. - Although some of us
are local agents for companies in which
they incured their goods on the Coast,
we have practically nothing whatever
to do with the Coast business. Local
consignees have come to us and said,
You're in the same company; take care
of this for us. Oh, no.
That is not
our part of the business.
SLATTERY WANTS MORE MONEY.
Lieut. Slattery, the army engineer of
ficer in charge of the federal engineer
ing work in the islands, Jias recpm
mended to General Mackenzie that he
be given authority to make a contin
uing contract to the amount of $800,000,
in addition to the $200,000 already ap-
proprlated for the commencement of
harbor dredging and improvement con-
tracts. Under the present contract the
harbor will be dredged to a width of
between 800 and 900 feet. The new
contract proposed by Lieut. Slattery
will extend it to a width of 1200 feet
