MAUI PLEASED WITH RACES The races at Kahului on the Fourth of July were among the best ever held on this island and seemed to give uni versal satisfaction. An unusually large attendance was on hand and the most orderly crowd seen anywhere for years. Many peo ple who attended for the first time ex pressed surprise at the good behavior of all present. On an occasion of this kind one naturally expects to see some misbehavior, but not so at Kahului. The races were fairly run and no charges of jobbery made. This is a most healthy sign, for nothing will so scon disgust the people as trickery. The officers of the association are all men of high standing and the manner in which they conducted the races was a credit to themselves and greatly to the advantage of the association. ' Few people are so dead as not to enjoy the exciting contests between good horses and those who attended the races this year were all thoroughly satisfied with the day's sport. The contests were strictly of a local nature as the purses were not large enough to justify the expense of bring ing Honolulu horses here. This also made jobbing less of a temptation and was far more satisfactory to all. If the association will continue to carry on the meetings each year in th future as they did this one they will do much to develop speedv horses here and afford much pleasure to the whole population on the island. Maui News. FOUR-FOOTED BEAST IMS DUCK BOUSE Kaimuki poultry-raisers are again suffering from the depredations of the strange beast which wrought such havoc in the chicken-houses of the dis trict a year ago. Une latest ravages by the four-foot ed intruder occurred in the depression between the Leahi Home and Diamond Head. One lady lost 53 young chickens one night, the wounds being made in the neck and the blood sucked. Early yesterday morning another lady wa3 awakened by a disturbance in her duck-house, where were 'roosting seven full-grown Pekm ducks. jit-r nijsiL.ai:i went out into the yard to investigate and saw a lithe form slinking away in the moonlight from the duck-house. It was more than twice as big as a full-grown mongoose and disappeared in the lantana thicket Inspection of the ducks' abode re vealed three of the Pekins lying stark dead, a fourth dying, and the re maining two badly bitten in the neck. The slayer of the birds had eaten a neat hole from a little beyond the base of the skull into the brain. It is improbable that the blood thirsty midnight marauder is a mon goose, for this pestiferous little an imal seldom hunts by night and an in stance of its attacking a bird as large as a Pekin duck is almost unknown. A mongoose that would attack, kill or maim seven big ducks at one sitting would have to be a veritable monster. The opinion of the afflicted neighbor hood is that the murderer is an animal which has made its escape from a zoo logical collection. CREWE-READ IN SHANGHAI O. Ford, the fireman libeling Oceanic Steamship Co. for 3190 on account of false im prisonment as alleged. Messrs. Gear and Dunne are proctors for libelant, and Mr. McCIanahan represents libelee.
