THE DISTRICT OF KOHALA
MAKES ITS COME BACK
Pretty Queer Work the Little Brownies Seem
to Have Been Doing in That Section
of the Big Island.
Editor Advertiser:
'Tis said that in
the not so very dim past, a volunteer
correspondent of the Hawaiian Gazette,
on a Christmas night, poised himseit in
a balloon elevated some hundreds, per
haps some thousand feet above the Ka
paan court house, provided with X-ray
and various other apparatus that en
abled him to observe and chronicle the
goings-on at various points of moment-
ary interest in the district on that an-
niversary night. The idea was quite
novel and so successful withal, that it
might well be repeated. But for the
rarity with which a balloon finds its
way to this district and. the expense
which may be presumed to attend the
transportation or the making of so
bulky a contrivance; and even more,
but for the sluggish mentality of some
of the reputed to be wealthy sugar
planters of Kohala, to whom the idea
came only as an afterthought, Sol.
Sheridan might have poised over this
island on velvet and feathers, behind a
specially-prepared luau, viewing at ease
all the ceremonies of opening the big
ditch, and been spared later the trying
experiences that incidentally attended
the hammering out of those deep con
volutions and corrugations in his liver.
Howsomever, not to weary your read
ers with too long a prelude, let us come
to the initial incentive to this scribble.
Taking easy observations from an
elevate! point of view, is, of course, all
very agreeable and interesting, but
there are other modes of observation
that may be quite as interesting from
their novelty, albeit they may be more
devious and tedious in the pursuing.
It probably never occurred to the
sleepy denizens of K.ohala, as Sol. calls
them who, however, to their credit be
it said, keep steadily and quietly about
their own business, and have learned to
ride a saddle without losing any cuticle
from inconvenieat spots it probably
never occurred to these people that
while the big ditch people were delving
and boring for water, some of the little
brownies in their employ and ostensibly
bent on the same laudable purpose
were secretly carrying on a little
private scheme of their own. However,
having a little nudge that made us sit
up alert and listen and soon proceed to
action, let your correspondent proceed
to tell of the surprising discoveries.
It seems that one of the little brown
ies before alluded to, while laboriously
boring with drill and pick and powder,
had thought out, and secretly con
structed during his off hours, a remark
able little apparatus based in princijde
on the excavating apparatus of some
beetle or other living thing that had
attracted his attention. Electrified,
thrilled with enthusiasm over the re
sults of some preliminary trials of this
apparatus, he took a friend into his con
fidence, and together they soon became
so absorbed in what proved to be a
very, interesting pastime, that they
never realized the extent to which they
were carrying on their secret opera
tions. Selecting as initial points for
their burrows, dark cavities within the
various tunnels that were incidentally
produced in the ordinary operations of
boring these tunnels along the line of
the big ditch, where their own en
trances would not be liable to attract
notice, they excavated, more correctly
speaking bored, with remarkable speed,
small galleries in every direction; but
with what special purpose in many
lines, cannot very well be surmised.
Their operations, however, were
varied occasionally by the excavation
of considerable galleries wherein they
might stand upright and take a breath
as it were, somewhat after the manner !
7 - i
of a diver. And these more spacious ' f
galleries, be it noted, whether by
chance or otherwise, are usually found !
beneath the centers of other activities.
Let us then follow our guide into some
of these weird passages, but brace up
.well for it, mind you, for be assured we
shall not be rushed at ease on uphol
stered springs, nor be landed in front
of a luau or presidential banquet at
the noon or night hour, nor be met at
the door by kid-gloved dignitaries who
shall usher us into the electric-lighted
and fascinating spread. All this may
come later. Indeed we are assured that
plans are already in course of elabora
tion, whereby these xmderground pas
sages shall be made a soureeof delight
to even such of the delicatelf nurtured
and the wealthy as may be disposed to
undertake these trips for the novelty of
the thing. But at present they are only
in what may be termed the pioneer
stage or process of development. And
we must be prepared to part with some
cuticle from heads and shoulders, if
aot from our precious points of saddle
contact.
Now, hold your breath, and here goes
for a long pull through a hole. Gee
whiz! but it is awful. Cramped, hot,
stiflinc. never-endinT. Horrors! but
ghaU h& tQ baek out
or ivQ to get out; Holy mother and
saints deliver us; say! lets back out!
.No? Can't do it? Murder! to have to
give up the ghost and be lost out of
sight in this lone hole. "Well, doubtless
it's no worse than the usual six-foot
hole, the shark's maw, or any other old
piace that luckless humanity is des
tined for, but ha! what's this? A
standing-up place, eh?
Merciful relief, but where are we?
Only under the Kohala Girls' School?
No further? Gee! and only the dim
light of a eandle to see by. Well, what
about that school? All right? Oh yes,
so they say. Leastways all but the
money part of it. Well, what about
that? Oh well, you see, none of those
schools are self-supporting; can't be.
-Charge isn't high enough and ean't be
put high enough without making en
trance prohibitory to the classes they
are built to provide for. Then, how
are they carried on? Aid of friends, of
course. What friends? Relatives?
Wealthy natives? Naw; nary a cent.
Leastwise not much more than that, ac
cording to all accounts. Who then?
A kind some people call ' ' dam mis
sionaries," of course. Why, "of
course," and why "dam"? Gracious!
you greeny; how long have you been
here? "Dam," of course, because
they buck agin graft and saloons and
other less mentionable resorts and prac
tices, and somehow seem to get along
fairly well most of them; probably be
cause they avoid those places and prac
tice thrift from the start. "Ot
course," because
they've always Lad
the peculiar habit or uevotmg a pari 01

ever small, to the. good of others less
fortunate or less thrifty than them- j
selves. But, say! we can't stop here,
