CfW i U L 1 1 T HEADY FOR SJEFENSE Think That They Are Unjustly Criticized by the Governor. The thunderbolts of Senatorial in dignation are about to be launched fortn at Governor Frear and the doc undent that will voice the feelings of ihe Senators promises to be a "gem of the purest ray serene." Three Senators have been grievous ly hurt by the statements of the Chief Executive that the work of the upper house has resulted .in crippling thi schools and making it comparatively easy for the youth of the land to find their way to the reformatory and the prison; passed the obnoxious "whisky ring" bill; slighted the land legisla tion and refused to confirm A. J. Campbell as Treasurer. Senators Quinn, Mopre and Harvey are the three Senators who feel that Governor Frear has not stated the case with exactitude or fairness and. las a consequence, they think that it devolves upon them to defend their actions as representatives of the peo ple and, incidentally, show that they were actuated only by the purest and most uplifting motives in passing the "whisky ring" bill; crippling the school department, refusing confirma tion to "one of the best Treasurer' the Territory has ever had," and striking out that portion of a me morializing resolution to Congress dealing with the all important prob lem of land legislation and policy. Prepare for Reply. These are a few of the counts in the indictment that Governor Frear dwelt upon in the course of his- talk on the legislature before the Men's Club of St. Andrew's Parish. He di vided the praise and the blame about evenly, but this has not tended to dissipate the indignation of the mem bers of the upper house. It is understood that a communica tion to Governor Frear is even now in the throes of drafting and that its birth will be recorded in the course of a day or two. It is presumed of course that it Will be a finished document, ranking for its biting sarcasm with Johnson's let ter to Lord Chesterfield, and will ring with the sonorous periods that mark ed the deliberations of the session of the Fifth Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii. : , M. C. Webster, who has been one of the Gazette Company's linotype opera tors for the past four years, departed on the S. S. Makura yesterday en route to JUngJand on a lour monrns vacation.
