Thoso Maul JucIrob
Tt BeomB to bo impossible for our
virtuous rulers to sqttnro tilings
on Maui in oflicial circles nnd estab
lish a judiciary which will bo credit
ablo at loast to the country
We are tirod of calling attention
to tho inequities of ulio juIro3 of
that island Wo have wasted ink
and paper in showing up tho disgrace
ful state of affaire Tho Maui
pooplo applaud us but they continue
to sit back quietly and lump tho
situation They bolievo that it
would bo fruitless to complain to
tho govommont but we bolievo that
no stono should bo loft unturned by
them in an honest attempt to purify
tho judiciary department of their
island
Tho Kallia Helokunihi business
has about reached tho limit of tole
rauco If tho authorities iu Hono
lulu propose to continue tho farce
the blamo and responsibility will be
transferred from Maui to Honolulu
Kaluas troubles with Helokunihi
have been published and aired before
our readers One is the Circuit
Judgo of Maui tho other is the
District Magistrate of Wailuku
Their domestic troubles have been
a standing Bcaudal aud the Btops to
tako redress on tho part of tho
superior judge have been a disgraco
to tho administration
Wo shall not devote any spice in
reviewing thoso affairs however as
wo bolievo that the case against
Judgo Helokunihi will be tried in
Honolulu next week Wo will not
refrain however from publishing the
latest escapade of tho circuit judge
who soemB to be under tho special
protection of the immaculate repub
lic
There is a big kick coming The
judgo owos a few bills in that lino
he imitnt03 tuo government Me
dposnt always pay thorn and at
times ho gots a suit and a garnishee
on bis wages
Tho other day such an incident
took place and as tho Circuit Judgo
would not appear before the District
Judge a judgment by default wns
given and notice of the garnishee
sent to tho Minister of Finance
Tho Cirouit Judgo iu his usual con
vivial manner ignored tho fact and
at tho ond of the month ho issued
bis usual draft on the treasury for
250 one months salary Ho pre
sented tho draft at a store where ho
owed a little bill and ho actually
paralyzod tho proprietor of tho
store by tolling him that he wantod
o settle the account agaiust him
aud desired chauge for his draft
Tho happy storekeeper was only
too willing As he did not have
change for tho draft iu tho storo he
hurriod to tho post office received
tho cash wanted and furnished tho
virtuous judgo with a recoipted bill
account rendered and the balance
in cash
So far so good Tho salary draft
was sent from tfhe local post office
to tho General Post offico in Hono
lulu From there it was presented
at the treasury and promptly re
pudiated as tho gamishoe had been
served Tho draft was roturned to
tho Wailuku Postmastor who de
manded the money back from tho
storekeeper who frantically went to
tho Judgo and asked him what in
h eavon -ho meant by palming off
a draft which he must know woud
be dishonored Tho judgo could of
course not understand tho affair at
all Ho was shocked that Mr
Damon should daro to dishonor a
draft signed by a Circuit Judge and
he proposes to look into tho matter
at onco in tne moantimo tuo store
keeper is out and injured and the
citizens of Maui are dolighted in
possessing Ruoh an honest and
strictly business like judgo
P S A Maui correspondent asks
us if thoro is auy law on our statuto
books relating to obtaining money
undor falso pretenses Not holding
any judgeship wo cant toll Ask
