Hero's my" Kaliko With her round faco so Binooth and brown, The sparkling black oyes all aglow I'd risk to match her 'gainst the town! Sho cannot boast a single curl, But in her mbuth two rows of pearls; Ah, sho is native through and through The and holoku My little Kaliko. Sho thinks this earth a fairy-laud, A place to sing and sail and swim And run about to hear a band; All full of mirth up to the brim Now, shuilling small foot through the sand, Ah, she is native through and through The and holoku, My little Kaliko. In her guileless, honest heart Envy or malico own no part; Sho's a brownie, and all is said, Poi for her, and never bread; Ah, she is native through and through The aud holoku, My little Kaliko. Sept., 1897. rf - Kohala. A. Neighborly Jingle. BT ANNE MAME PRESCOTT. It went on an outing that short-cake bo brown, And was made by a cook and sent from the town; When nut into pieces it went all around That delicate short-cake, with fine flavor orown'd. Now. long cake, midst cane-fields, (schools) in oasy to find, And not half so lazy as sugar to grind (eat) You may chew and chew if you're patient and "good." And make your jaws ache with that tiresome food; But, a short cake tuck'd in a long shining pan, Roll'd, thin, light and flaky, tho old- fashioa'd plan Oh, that is a Biipper for boy, or for man I We'd iniBsed seeing shoit ecko for 3 many a day, Whon, lol oame a friend from quite far away; "Somo dainties," oho said, "I am suro you must need, There's nothing to keop one so faat as a feed; I'll seud a short-cake, for that's part of my creed." Now, a friend who kens short-cake is friend indeed, And far bettor than iu time of neod; Give to mo tho woman who lives iu kind acts, And carries as Christian a bountiful paok, Who has of good words no beggarly lack; We ate of tho to our heart's content, And bblievo that Giver was from Heaven sent. Oct., 1897. English. Speaking Natives. If tho Government of tho United States should ultimately annex Hawaii, which seems to bo contemplated, they will add a praotioally .English-speaking pooplo of the Union. It will cause some surprise amongst ourselves to loam that the natives, of full and mixed blood, aro learning English almost exclusively. To thoir orodit be it said that they havo an admirable educational system, with froo instruction aud compulsory attendance; and, in ordor that tho system shall work to full advantage, English is imperative in all schools. Tho consequence is that, whoroas it is difficult to find a native who oannot road and write in tho lnnguago of his birth, tho rising generation will have an equal command of English, This, it may be said, is the work of Americans. Yet tho Portuguese aro tho most numerous body of whito inhabitants in tho ilsands, their children on the school register numbering 8,000, or moro than all tho rest of tho Europeans and tho Amorioans combined, Tho Chinese and Japanese, although probably moro strongly ropresontod than evsu the Portuguese, do not figure as largely on the roll-, and tho explanation is that I he A'iatic races are excluded from tho and have, therefore, less inducement to equip themselves with a reading and writing knowledge of English. It is not without significance that tho whole organisation and tho text-books aro American. Tho way haB been artfully proparod for the absorption of the islands by tho oountry which has civilised thorn, Livtrpaol Mercury. - NOT ON THE TICKET. A bcnsatlon was sprung at the Central Committee headquarters yesterday afternoon by the announcement that thcro had been an omission In tho ticket filed and consequently tho entire ticket would bo Illegal. Aftsr working" everybody up to fovcr hent tho member making this announcement stated that the omission consisted in the falluro to include Rainier Beer on tho list of candidates for popular favor.
