ISLAND THADTC ROTJOITKT RATlRPAnTinW onAUANTltKn
Tho Farmoro Frotost
Tho agricultural interests of tho
United State are up in arms against
tho proposition for annexation of
tho Hawaiian Islands and aro for
warding to Congress monstrous pe
titions of remonstranno against such
action upon tho part of that bodyj
The farmors have most excellent
reasons for their protost and havo
expressed it in tho following forcible
and logioal petition
In tho name of the farmors of Am
erica wo respectfully appeal to tho
honorablo Sonntoatul House of Rep
resentatives in Congress assembled
Firstly Wo solemnly protest
against hasty consideration in Con
gress of tho treaty of annexation
with Hawaii
Socondly Wo most urgently re
quest that this subject be treated
with the deliberation it vital im
portance deserves thus affording
the people of the United States suf
ficient time to inform the honorablo
Congress of their viows
Thirdly Tho farraorR of this
nountry oppose annexation Tho
sentiment among them against it is
woll uigh unanimous Their opposi
tion is based upon patriotism and
most disinterested motives the
national welfare political justice
Fourthly In addition to these
reasons for its defoat the farmers
recognize that annexation would
seriously interfero with tho other
wise promising development of our
domestic bent sugar aud caneaugar
industry Already tho bare possi
bility of annexation has- called a
halt to numerous sugar factory en
terprises which had promised a
homo market to farmers for a new
aud profitable crop Defeat annex
ation and you remove tho last ob
stacle in the way of enabling Amer
ican agriculture capital and labor
to produoo the 100000000 worth of
sugar aunually importod beretoforo
Tho Bigners of this petition already
number more thau three millions
and the number is increasing as
rapidly as the dooument can ho cir
culated among them
In presenting its remonstrance
tho American Sugar Growers Asso
ciation calls attention to tho fact
that the present tariff operates sat
isfactorily so far as all other sugar
is concerned but the very legislation
intended to benefit American farm
ers is nullified in large measure by
tho futuro fact that tho Hawaiian
planter is so situated as to secure
overy advantage intended for our
own farmer Tho reciprocity treaty
of 1875 admitting his sugar free
gives him through this remission of
duty an absolute bounty of nearly
2 oontB a pound upon an industry
already thoroughly established
With cheap yellow labor tho rich
est sugar lands in the world and an
industry paying as high as 50 per
cent profit thero is little prospect
of very soon establishing our own
beet sugar industry so long as tho
protective duty of nearly 2 cents per
pound stands in favor of the Hawai
ian product as woll as our own
The annoxation of the islands would
under tho constitutional provision
relating to intorstato commerce for
ever debar tho enforcement of a pro
tective tariff ogainst this coolie labor
product and work irreparable injury
to American farming iuterests
A protectorate would accomplish
all the results desired and to bo sel
aurod under annexation whilo afford
ing an opportunity of protecting our
homo sugar growing interests Den
