The very hardest lesson a young
Amorican has to loam when ho
enters tho array is that of obedience
For tho first time his individual
authority is dethroned He is as
fractions as a thoroughbred colt
that long robels against tho whip
and spur It isj hard for him to
undorstand that his freedom of
action must bo subordinated to mili
tary necessity Ho chafes if ho
doos not openly rebel but when
once whipped into lino he makes
the best soldier on the earth
My first drillmaster had been my
friend and tho friend of my family
from my boyhood up Wo had
hunted and fished and courted to
gather and exchanged eecretB with a
freedom that does not obtain among
brothers Ono day early in my ex
perionco as a soldier and while
everything was being hurried with
a view to getting us into Mexico we
had beon drilling till I felt ready to
drop Tho ropeatod orders strunk
pain to my ears nnd 1 would have
conscientiously sworn that mv
musket weighed a ton At length
when within easy oar shot of him I
shouted For heavens sake Bob
stop this tomfoolery and lots go
over to the tavern
Ho never looked at mo but roar
ed Corporal take that man and
drill him like the devil
The corporal did and I thought
Id die of exhaustion I fully mead
to challenge the drillmaster and

Not a Kings Son
A paragraph is going round tho
papers which announces that one
Lieut Jules Ord who died reeontly
in tho United States was a direct
descendant of George IV and Mrs
Fitzhorbert This story is a pure
fiction as after tho death of Mrs
Fitzhorbert in 1887 there was an
investigation of the history of hor
acquaintance with tho Prince of
Wales afterwards George IV by
tho Duke of Wellington executor
of George IV Lord Albemarle and
Lord Stourton and it was then ex
pressly aunouncod that thoro had
been no issue of their privato mar
riage A sealed paokot containing
the evidence of this marriago and
other documents has been deposited
at Coutts Bank for more than GO
years A very long time ago tho
Duke of Wellington told a friend
that George IV begged him to
make it his business to boo mat no
the King was buried with a minia
ture which he had beon in tho habit
of wearing Tho Duke fulfilled this
commission After tho Kings death
ho took possession of the miniature
which was sunpendod from a gold
chain which had been worn round
tho ueok and kept it until tho pro
cess of ombalming was finished
Then tho duke replaced it before
the coffin was closed It was a like
