A Word for tho Poor
Ed The Independent
Ednoato this poor white trash and
it wants the earth This from the
Advertiser n paper that is edited
owned and supported by a class who
were lifted up and saved from that
lowly position aolely through the
hard earned dollars of the generous
hearted Hawaiians both male and
female sounds harsh and discord
ant against tho poor Henry Olay
Abraham Lincoln and many other
great men of America sprang from
the ranks of the poor but never
wanted the earth nor over robbed
their friends as did tho pious rulers
of tlm oligarchy

The Vanilla Bean
This valuable product which is
highly prized for making extracts of
perfumery and in cooking has with
in the past few months become very
scarce and the price in consequence
has advanced to three times what it
formerly sold for Nothing has ever
been found to take its placo in cook
ery or for perfumery and conse
quently tho price must remain high
for some yoars to comp as it takes
three years for the plaut to come
into bearing after which it continues
in fruit for several years improving
from year to year if well oared for
A recent published statement says
that the shortage of 1891 was due to
a frost which destroyed whole plan
tations Then in 1895 a clash be
twoen tho Indians who occupy and
cultivate the large plantations
around Papautla Mexico the centre
of this industry and the Mexican
authorities who own tho lands re
sulted in tho former being driven
out but not before they had suc
ceeded in almost entirely destroying
tho vanilla plants as revenge Those
two causes account for the shortage
as it requires three or four years be
fore a plant will yeld fruit This
shortage is much greater than is
generally known The present price
of beans is 16 per pound and it is
not unlikely that it may advance to
18 or 20
We have soveral times urged the
planting of vanilla as a minor in
dustry as it will flourish here in al
most any locality where it has
plenty of water but is particularly
adapted to the rainy sections of Ha
waii Although it requires three to
four years for the vines to come into
full bearing it will hon pay better
than almost any oher industry
that does not require much capital
Nor will it interfere with any other
light work aud is particularly suit
ed to femalos In a future issue wo
will give some particulars regarding
its cultivation and mode of curing
