The Marrioago of King George to
Princess Lavinui
Great excitement has pervaded
Nukualofa for the last few weeks
King George Tobou II called all
his chiofs from tho different islands
to choose his bride Ofa is the high
est chiefoss here and when ohildron
they were betrothed by their par
ents in the Tongan fashion and Ofa
has been left on the Island of Niu
Tobu Tabu and guarded as a sacred
maiden or Taupo but King George
fell in love with Lavinui daughter
of Kubu Minister of Police and de
termined she should be his bride
The chiefs met and thoir votes were
fourteen for Ofa and seven for Lavi
nui This vote remained the same
for days At last the King wrote
and told tho ohiefs he would Jwod
Lavinui or nobody and he did on
the 1st day of Juno He not only
married the girl but elevated hor to
his own rank by crowning her Queen
of Tonga The crown is a magnifi
cent one being newly made for the
purpose Two days previous to the
wedding invitations were issued
which read as follows
