THURSDAY OCT 2G 1899
THE WAIALUA MATTER
Of this going to bo celebrated
case tho Advertiser soys It ap
pears to be generally understood
that the Honolulu hold of the
Dillingham stock of tbe Wainlua
Agricultural Company will be pro
tected if necessary by the further
iisue of more stock to the amount of
a million Heros riohnessll Protto
tion indeodll The issu of another
million io the kind of protection
that a hungry lion would give a
lamb
The first thought that strikes tbe
looker on at the game is why when
forty percent of two millions of dol
lars iu assessable shares may be call
ed in why a proposition to issue a
million of dollars in now shares is
made Tho forty percent on the
present assessable shares will yield
eight hundred thousand dollars
Why not call iu this sum rather
than issue now shares
When Waialua was floated the
promoters understood to be Castle
Cooke and Messieurs Dillingham
and Watorhouse took the paid up
shares of tbe company in the follow
ing proportion Castle Cooke
825000 B P Dillingham 187000
H Waterhousp 187000 For these
plums it is also understood that
Castle Cooke put in the Halstoad
plantation Mr Dillingham the Ka
wailoa lease and Mr Watorhouse
500 aores of Mokuleia land and 14
artesian wells
Tho confederated promoters fear
ing that the two millions in assessa
ble shares nould not be placed on
our island market authorized Col
Soper to offer one million dollars iu
shares to the San Francisco people
Mr Dillingham says that he did not
giye suuh authority to Col Soper
but Judge Perry says in bis decision
that the colonel was authorized and
commands Mr Dillingham to settle
with him
Mr Dillingham not banking much
on Col Sopers mission joined with
Castle Cooke to place all tbe as
sessable shares on this market and
succeeded in placing overy share
Col Sopor also plaood his million
dollars in shares on tho San Fran
oisoo market In othor words tho
promoters sold three million of dol
lars in assessable shares with but
two millions in hand for delivery
Anyone will admit that this is an
awkward prodioamont for the pro
moters to be in but it is one of
their own handiwork But tho pro
moters took ono million and a half
dollars in paid up shares To a
business man who thinks more of
his reputation than of dollars the
way that suggests itself for tho pro
motors to meet their obligations is
to deliver paid up shares as far as
they will go and then go into tho
market for asaeseablos to oomplote
delivery
Surely it is ploading tbe baby act
to ask presont shareholders of Wai
alua many of whom have purchased
at n goodly premium to como to tho
roun of promoters some of whom
took as fees for promotion of Kihoi
1500000 being half of tho capital
ization of MoBrydo 1850000 more
than half of its capitalization of
Olaa 2500000 ono half of its capi
talization and 1500000 of tho
capitalization of the company whoso
affairs are undor discussion
The Independent has always re
frained from hurling at tho head of
tbe rash speculators who now are in
tears the w6rdB we told you so
