Bishop Eatato Improvements
The fire on lower Punchowl street
yesterday on the holdings of the
Bishop Estate was started at the
request of the Estate which wanted
the ground cleared It was not the
destruction of infected promises as
an evening paper said The pro
perty was vacated some time ago
and the site will
be ued for ware
houses
General improvements are being
made by the owners in the lower
Punchbowl street or Kakaako dis
trict Ponds are being filled up
with sand mud and coral taken
from the bottom of the hav bv tho
Government dredger the Bishop
Estate paying for the service All
applications for land in this neigh
borhood for residence purpose have
been refused When fully reclaim
ed and made healthful the looality
will be used for business purposes

The Supreme Court filed a decision
yesterday which -will close tho
man saloon at Waikiki Many
tant questions aro involved In tho
case Tho place lias heen running
about a year during this time Peacock
and the Annex were given modified sa
loon licenses Tho law providing for
light wjno and beer licenses forbids
the issuance of any license under it to
operate at any place within two miles
of a saloon At the end of tho vnnr
Ottman applied for renewal of his li
cense It was refused on the ground
that his place was within two mil of
Peacocks establishment The matter
was referred to the Sunrome nnnrt
The following is tho courts summary
Hold that a renewal of a light wine
and beer license cannot bo issued
n tho prescribed limits two miles
from a saloon after the Issuanco of a
eplrltuous liquor license therein oven

after tho light wlno and beer license

steamers or othor vessels in tho bay
No handling to bo dono by anyone
in Kahulul
Merchandiso for localities on Maul
outside of Kahulul may bo shipped
through Kahulul by being loaded di
rectly from ships boats or lighters in
to clean cars by clean crows in quar
antine on tho railroad wharf and then
run out of Kahului without delay
All shipments to bo accompanied
by a certificate signed by Mr Zum
walt quarantine officer of Kahulul
No merchandise for other ports or
localities is to be shipped in or out of
Hilo at present Vessels in Hilo har
bor may use tho landing at either Wai
akea or Walnaku for loading or dis
charging freight
Freight which 1s consigned to par
ties In Hilo may be landed at Hilo but
must not bo shipped or distributed
from Hilo to other localities
