It was announced that the society
has been supporting for a year past
forty families whoso members were
unable to make their own living The
cost of this fond been 203220 Start
ing the year with a balance of 1500
collections had been mado of 2317C5
inclusive of membership fees dona
tions and the proceeds of a luau and
concert There was a balance now In
the treasury of 88543 The member
ship now numbers eighty one having
greatly gained during tho last few
months
Besides this accounting the societys
officers reported on a special fund
which had been raised for tho work
among the plague sufferers Altogeth
er 818075 was received for this pur
pose and of this 726G47 was still on
hand The bulk of this sum was col
lected by Mark P Robinson who had
volunteered to aid the society His

the Saturday night of the Chinatown
lire until the following Thursday the
society fed and provided with clothing
and blankets fifty people at the relief
camp number 1 Since then It has had
visiting committees constantly in the
field and has done a deal of good In
caring for unfortunates who come from
quarantine penniless and homeless
This work will bo continued and any
balance left of the societys plague
fund will be devoted to its general
charity Tho officers voiced tho thanks
of the society to the generous public
which mado possible its efforts

bill which contemplated tho prac
tical disfranchisement of the Negro
votera of tho state was defeated by

with which the lower house ruled
the moasure out of court are in re
freshing contrast to tho short
sightedness and thinly disguised

The glad tidings spread with
marvelous rapidity From all di
rections mounted and unmounted
men hastened to welcome the re
lief column Those remaining hoist
ed flags and thero was a universal
feeling of joy and thankfulness
Temporary Relief Sccioty
At the time of the first outbreak of
plague when It was known that tho
authorities had decided to burn tho
infected districts in Chinatown and to
send the refugees into quarantine a
number of Japanese ladies got togeth
er and organized a Temporary Relief
Society
This society is most grateful to tho
many kind friends for tho hearty as
sistance It has received By their lib
eral donations it was able to provide
clothing and other necessary articles
to hundreds of destitute Japanese who
wero unfortunate in losing everything
during tho great fire of January 20th
It may be of interest to the gener
ous donors to know that tho donations
received amounted to 896
Besides 1110 garments for men
women and children 588 pairs of un
derwear needles thread scissors
combs soap etc were distributed
Now that the people In the detention
camps have been released this society
will disband transferring the balance
of Its fund Into tho hands of tho Jap
anese Benevolent Society an organi
zation which Is doing general relief
work
