I Paint
In the course of an interview ac
companied with a portrait on
Wild Beasts aud How I Paint
Them -Mr J T Nettloship tho
well known paintor gives many in
teresting particulars about his
work
Do animals object to sitting for
thuir portraits asked tho inter
viewer
On ono occasion replied Mr
NottleBhip a tiger put out its paw
and tore a pieoe out of my coat bat
I cannot son bow animals can know
that you are painting them Most
of them tieat me with cold indiffer
ence but I recollect a lion becom
ing fearfully bored wjth my pres
ence I had been measuring parts
of his body with my penoil and at
last unable to stand me any longer
he began to movo about from spot
to spot assuming all sorts of atti
tudes now crouching now lower
ing his eyes now throwing himself
down at the back of the cage do
ing in fact just what suited me
and really taking positions as an in
telligent human model might have
done Tho different Zooa in
land and on the Continent give all
that an animal painter requires but
no doubt wild animals suffer from
being in captivity As a rule when
a caged lion becomes full grown he
is either too fat or too lean and his
muscles are not what they ought to
be though he does not know it
However notwithstanding the ef
fects of captivity caged animals can
be very natural A few years ago
there wos a three-year-old lion at
the Zoo who habitually stalked the
elephants as they passed by He
used to hide himself and wait for
them ignoring the fact of the bars
between just as he would have
done when stalking an anlelope a
zebra or a buffalo in Africa
Which are the most troublesome
animals to paint
Those belonging to the cat tribe
lions tigers leopards and the
rest Their subtlety of expression
both in face and movement is ex
traordinary Indeed they can boast
more variety in this respect than
most other animals Bears hnye
a comical and sometimes a pathetic
expression that of atags is mostly
in the eyes aud carriage of the
head Serpents are exceedingly
diltioult to tackle especially if you
want to paint them in the act of
killing Their movements are so
swift that you caut Bee the momont
of seizing I took great pains over
the reticulated python which wbb
at last years Academy Js you re
member be was seizing a peacock
My objeot was color Now the
reticulated python is wonderfully
iridescent His soales are variously
colored amber pearl gold and
copper the main color on the upper
part and sideB being laid out in a
pattern of greyish tawny and deep
black brown but when he has late
ly changed hiB skin and is seen in
sunlight his whole surface takes
delicate prismatic hues of blue rose
purple and green Cassells Satur

the following letter signed by the

It took mo twenty five years to
discover what I have just found out
Robert Wilcox is hypocrisy men
dacity deceit aud instability per
sonified Wilcox is a cunning and
patient deceiver and decpived mo
for twenty one long years Wilcox
has adopted all the vices of the Ha
waiians aud none of their virtues
Wilcox has repeatedly told me that
the llawaiians wore too poor to send
money for pushing thoir bill boforo
Congress and I learned that the
Hawaiiotis had sent him plenty of
money which he used exclusively
for parading himself in Washington
as an Hawaiian prinpe as he did in
Italy though I introduced him to
all simply aa Mr Wilcox
Mr Wilcox wrote moudaciousl y to
tho Hawaiians that ho the man who
fought planned aud passed tho Ha
waiian bill boforo Congress Messrs
Caypless Little and all mombors of
tho territorial committoo of tho
lfoiiBo and senato can testify to tho
contrary
When Morono and Wilcox are
falling out because tho latter failed
to givo a part of the dimes and
nickels which he collected from tho
Hawaiians to the Italian scoundrel
who was driven out of this country
it is about timo that honest men
will get thoir dues and that tho Ha
waiians who have somo self respect
loft will oaRt their votes for Princo

which caused this sudden love for
